I use hay in the brood box I put a fair but in there and leave her too sort it out herself. I do think most of these things are down to experience of the mother hen. Chickens aren't the most graceful of creatures and I think some of it is just clumsiness.
I think my white Sussex is doing the same as mommissan's hens. She's a first time broody so it may be down to that. I was away on holiday and my mum noticed one egg cracked out side of her brooding space. When I returned from my trip I found another egg intact but outside the brood and I found...
Thanks for the speedy response. Those links will come in handy. :)
They have access to oyster shells It comes in a grit mix I give them seperate to their feed. Tonight I used the two eggs shells I got from the one laying, baked them and crushed them so if they need more calcium it's there.. As...
So my girls are still quite young no older than 20 weeks, my biggest girl started laying 3 days ago, she layed a nice big egg the first day, a slightly smaller one yesterday. Today I went to check for an egg and didn't find one in the nesting box or coop, she layed both previous eggs around...
Yeah I was worried about that, I can't really get a dog due to my family not wanting one. With Chickens it was hard enough to convince them lol.
I've been urinating around the coop as I've heard it helps keep them away for a while, I think my best option is going to be building a taller fence...
So yesterday while I was in my garden shed a saw a fox run across the back of my garden then return again 5 minutes later. It's not uncommon for foxes to be around here, i live in a Pretty rural area so I know they're about I've just never seen one in my garden.
Where it ran across is about 40...
Ah thanks, that chart will come in really handy. :) tonight I sat with them for about an hour, just chilling with my girls. Got two of them eating out of my hand! Such a small thing but I'm so happy! :D I just picked a bit of fresh grass and held it out for them. Again thanks for the help.
Yeah think they're still just a bit nervous. They seem to be getting the hang of things, although the biggest one hasn't quite worked out the ramp to the coop and always seems to just jump straight up lol. Its very amusing to watch.
They even seem to be sorting out a pecking order, nothing too...
Hi there guys, thanks for the warm welcome.
I have a Nera, an amber and a belleblue but it's a local hybrid so it's called a Cambridge blue. They seem To be getting on fine so far. Had so many pointless worries about them not leaving the coop but they've found their way out now and they seem...
Hi there, just got my three hens, two days ago, they're between 15-17 weeks old.
It's been quite smooth so far apart from all my pointless worrying! Thankfully this website has been here for me and given peace of mind!
I've only just signed up but I'd been browsing the site weeks before I got...
