My version of a chicken tractor is basically an open-bottomed movable pen that houses chickens. We use our chicken tractors to raise meat birds (Cornish-X broilers). I have a few criteria for our tractor design. First, my pregnant wife must be able to move it easily. Second, it must hug the...
we are planning on trying the fertrell Poultry Nutri-Balancer, without Methionine for our next mill order. we get 900 pounds at a time and would like to replace the synthetic vitamins with something allegedly better. this is our current layer recipe of 900 lbs
500 lbs pulverized corn
90 lbs...
every year we buy 50 cornish cross broiler chicks and raise them in our chicken tractors. we are set on the breed and won't bother with dual purpose birds again. we have had ok luck with estes hatchery and have used them a few times. they are local and we don't have to pay shipping. we are...
we pile our excessive quantities of coffee grounds separate from our other table scraps which get fed to the pigs. the hens scavenge through it once the pigs are done. the hens have access to the coffee grounds full time. once in a while a hen will scratch at the pile of coffee ground. i...
our tinted layers are just laying brown. we will try again for our next purchase of chicks. does anyone know of a reliable source? we usually get ours form http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/ although i think we got the last bunch from the semi-local http://www.esteshatchery.com/
i don't know how i'd keep my chickens safe from predators if i didn't use metal wire fencing. i guess i could use that pvc coated stuff but i try not to use pvc when ever i get the chance not to.

has anyone had any luck with putting a timed light in their coop to get their chickens laying again? last winter i put a timed light in my coop during the fall to keep the daylight hours and tricking the chickens to keep laying. it seemed to work they only dropped production a little bit. this...
i am new here too. i must admit it is a bit clunky but certainly not daunting. i don't participate in any other boards but i figure things will begin to make more sense as time passes. i hope so..

i have a three year old chicken tractor of the EMT persuasion that has been in the sun, heat, freezing cold, snow loads, big dogs and kids climbing on it you name it it still is in fine shape. i expect it to last for ten more years. the weakest link being the chicken wire. that will be first...
i designed and built a few of these chicken tractors. i know of several other people that also used these simple designs. everyone that has built one loves it.
i just thought i'd share my experience, failures and successes. plans are free with photos.
open source..
if you build one please...
electrical conduit is the only thing i i'd ever use to make a portable chicken coop. http://notdabblinginnormal.wordpress.com/2009/03/14/building-a-chicken-tractor/
a hooped cattle panel version would come a distant second and only as a hen house.
i'd never use wood. too heavy, doesn't hold...
