    Young Rooster getting Beat-up

I have a young rooster (12-14 weeks old) that I want to put with three Buff Orpington hens. I put him yesterday and all three hens jumped on him and started kicking his butt! I had to save him. Is he just too young? Will he defend himself once he matures? How do acclimate them to him and...

1/2 Rhode Island Red 1/2 Orpington Rooster

Thank you. I'm sorry that I had to whine but I was surprised that there has not been a myriad of opinions. I guess the lesson to learn is that chickens aren't that complicated and folks figure the answer was obvious. Thank you again, you mysterious Anatidaephiliac.

Bad experience with a tub plucker manufacturer.

At the risk of violating any terms of use of the forum, I thought it important to share email that I received from a tub plucker manufacturer in Ohio (will remain unnamed unless allowed). On their website, I inquired about the country of manufacture below is the thread. Of course it is in...

Not broody hens laying in brooding hens box?

An Update. Finally added another box today and got broody off of the nest (boy she did not want to leave. She spread her wings and legs, cartoon like, and held on). Nevertheless she had 9 eggs there. I candled them all and had 2 that weren't fertile (unless just laid); 3 that I would estimate at...

    tagging to track age?

It looks like I am going to have a bunch of birds of varying ages from a mixed hatch. I want to tag them somehow to track their age for harvesting purposes. What is available? What experience does anyone have. Rob

Not broody hens laying in brooding hens box?

Thanks Ameraucaunas. I am not concern that they are in the same box. I've seen it many time before when I was just raising eggs. But now how a roo and want to hatch some meat birds. My concern is the uneven age of incubation from the eggs being laid in the same box every day.

Not broody hens laying in brooding hens box?

I have three Buff Orpington hens that I got when a friend gave me a young R I Red roo. The hens are less than a year-old and the roo is doing his job. I have the hens in small EGGLU coop with a single laying box that all three have used and then they roost outside of the box in the coop...
