I need some help with the color genetics of my muscovies. I thought that blue was a recessive gene, but my blue female had all blue babies. My only male is a black piebald. Can someone tell me what's going on? Am I wrong about the color or how the genetics work?
Here's two of the babies...
I'm trying to build a new roost for my muscovies, but can't really find much information about height or how much space per bird( which is probably different between males and females). Does anyone have any ideas?
I know that I'll have to have a bar that's only 1-1.5' off the ground for my...
Well... she just suddenly died. She was happily chirping and enjoying the water i gave her and then she just suddenly fell over on her side and got stiff. I've had a weak little duckling do this to me before, but under different circumstances.
I have a small flock of 8 6-week-old goslings. They are allowed out during the day with my other birds (ducks and chickens) and goats and are locked up at night. They were fine an hour and a half ago. I went out just now to put them up for the night and found my littlest gosling just outside the...
I don't currently have oyster shell for them, but I will if I need to.
From to to bottom: normal egg( from another hen), bloody egg(Rose), pinhole egg(Penny), and banded egg(also Penny).
Here's a close up of the egg with holes and the banded eggs.
This past week, my 2.5-3 year old red sexlink, Penny, started laying weird eggs. The first one was slightly longer than a normal egg. The next one was the same but also had a few spots where the shell had holes. Today she laid one with a ridge around the middle of it, like a belt. I know its her...
If your drake is successfully mating with girls, then the eggs will likely be fertile.
I don't have any experience hatching duck eggs (I just put my first batch in my incubator last night), but based on the couple of times I incubated chicken eggs I would say that #1 likely isn't going to...
Should you rest locally sourced eggs? And if so, for how long? I could only find information on shipped eggs and eggs from your own flock. I have two dozen duck eggs that I got from about 45min away and plan on resting them for 12 hours.
Here's the latest update from the lab:
"Histopathology: Intestine: The tissues are markedly autolytic, precluding critical evaluation; however, large numbers of cross and longitudinal sections of cestodes are present in the lumen or attached to the mucosa. Trachea: Apart from autolysis, no...
The lab called and said that there was a good bit of mucus in the throat, and she must not have been eating for a while, since she had no muscle. They also found a couple parasite eggs, but that may or may not be significant. They can't narrow it down yet, but I should know more next week after...
I'm in Alabama. I've checked the feed and it seems fine. I've had issues with coccidiosis in the past, but nobody seems to be having any symptoms of it right now. I've saved the body of the hen from this morning, and I'll try to get in contact with the lab and see if they'll take it.
About two months ago, I got about a dozen new chickens, a mix of australorp pullets and Red sexlink hens( actual ages unknown). Within the first two weeks, three australorp pullets had died. Two looked like they had just died in the middle of the night while sleeping on their roosting bars and...
