You're right that feed left out can attract scavengers. What you do depends on what equipment you have.
We have both circumstances on our homestead. For my grow-out coop and run I hang the feeder out under the roof overhang during the day and put it just inside the coop man-door at night. So, no...
Chickens actually started out roosting in trees and there's lots of people that keep them that way still. Nighttime predators are the biggest risk. Owls in particular. And some species of fox can climb. And raccoons or large cats if those are in your area (I've read that .
The temperature part...
Looks good! I have a few thoughts to share, I assume you're looking for feedback.
I didn't see where the windows would be other than the mesh (?) at the top of the west wall. In SC, abundant ventilation will be more important than wind protection.
Also think about where you would put feed and...
How big they should be depends on the breed. If you've not raised them before it's helpful to have an idea of how large layer pullets are at the same age. If you put a layer pullet and broiler pullet next to each other the general impression should be something like, "Holy moly that's a big...
If you have the ability to separate the one out for a few days it wouldn't be a bad idea. Once somebody starts getting picked on it can be hard to stop. When you reintroduce the one, do it at night after everybody's gone to "roost".
Good luck with your chicks!
Yes, they can die. If not seen to, the poop will dry over their cloaca (aka vent) and they get backed up and die. Best to deal with it as soon as possible.
So I've always wondered how much I pay for my eggs. I know a lot of people say that's a dangerous question to ask. But does anybody actually know? I could probably figure it out but it would only be a very rough estimate. I've not been a strict record keeper.
I'm launching an experiment to...

Awesome! Have you posted about it on here already? If so I must have missed it somehow. After years and years of deep litter we put sand in the coop last weekend. At first it really sucked because I was using a cat litter scoop and the sand was still really wet. Now the sand is...
I use 2x4 welded wire across the entire bottom of the run. The floor of the coop area is mostly wood. In my experience the 2x4 wire seems to be enough to deter predators but enough to allow chickens foraging.
I would also advise going around the outside of your run area (lowest 24" maybe?)...
Good stuff. I've been trying to figure out why you're adding insulation. Is it to cut down on the radiant heat that the sun is going to generate on those metal walls? Are you going to use the foil backed kind?
Looks drippy. Is it or does it just look that way? I have some watering nipples but they always seem to leak and make a muddy mess of everything. Not to mention going through water a lot faster than necessary. What's your experience been?
