I personally don't enjoy using knives with them. I take my .22 and just one in the head does the trick. Little flapping around , hardly and exit wound then once the flopping is done I drain the blood and clean it up if i'm eating it. But just as long as you do it quickly to lessen to suffering...
I recently got two younger birds this winter and with a coop with mature hens and one silkie roo I didn't inter mingle the two flocks due to age differences. So long story short I placed the two birds one roo and one hen in a makeshift coop inside of my shed a nice cozy 4x4 space with a heat...
amount of light should be enough. All you really want to do is keep it light enough so they don't fall asleep. I'm sure you already do but I had a drop off in eggs in the past couple of weeks and I started to mix in more oyster shells to the feed.
I also have a basic heat lamp / spot light...
Went to open the pop door to allow hens to roam the run this morning and it's a bloody mess. All of them seem to be in good shape but my RIR has a peak off her comb to be almost severed off . The blood is clotted and it doesn't seem to be bleeding anymore. I'm not sure how it happened the coop...
nope no abundance of feathers laying about my cochins on the otherhand who are in a different set up have a large amount of feathers they are alot younger.
I have introduce a new mouser ( cat) to the household , she likes the chickens and even tries to sleep in the coop . hens don't seem to be...
I havn't noticed any extra volume of feathers laying about. They look normal to me. Maybe the startings of a molt? I had almost but forgot about molting . Fall and spring right? I'm going to count feathers be right back lol..
Hello I have 3 hens 1 RIR 2 Hybreed's about 30 or so weeks old. Production of eggs was on the upswing when they started a few weeks ago my RIR was the last to start . I was getting at least two eggs a day up to last week. Now i'm maybe getting one a day . I don't know if the shorter days are...
same as above tried to splint/hobble brace one of my chicks it didn't work but give it a shot. Try searching on BYC for answers it helped me. I also saw some crazy thing about a chick seat? keeps them still while they heal. just work with it and hope for the best. Also try the Hock joint tendon...
Now your making me feel bad I just culled a chick for having a funny leg and your going around spouting off about that thing I give it to ya man I wouldn't have the heart to watch him strut around. All I have to say is my god what on earth is that thing!!
So I'm still green here with this here chicken stuff "stands and waves". I'm just now getting my 3 pullets to produce some eggs and it seems they are coming into their own. Past few weeks have been real fun to come home from work to be greeted by wacky running half flying hens who are just so...
I built a 4x4 ' coop inside of my shed and cut a pop door into the side of it. Then added a 8x4' run for them . This is right next to the other birds coop and the older girls are already saying hello by jumping on the wall of the coop inside of the shed and looking down in wonder.
six pages deep wow nice thread here. Go for it!!!! I just started this spring and it was a bumpy road at first with all of the unknowns out there. But It's not hard once you get going. Build a coop ,secure it , feed them, water them and watch them grow into fun animals . The pay off is much more...
I'm sure this has been asked a million times. But for my sake of reading through old post and filtering through all of the junk here goes. I have 3 hens all pullets and starting to lay. I have 3 more hens that are only 5 weeks old can I introduce them now or should I wait a bit longer?
My chickens follow me around the yard anytime i'm outside. This didn't allways happen . Once I got rid of the rooster and they found out I gave them the food water and treats it was all over from there. I let mine free range untill they go to bed they will go home and roost all on there own...
