My red star sex linked chicken lost a nail this week. I was finally able to wrangle her for examine her more closely and her foot looks awful. It seems like bumble to me, but I want second opinions.
If it is bumble, does it appear too advanced to treat with vetricin? I'm leaving for a trip soon...
Three days ago a mink exposed a weakness in our coop and climbed a straight wall seven feet high to break through a screen. It killed three khaki Campbells.
When my husband discovered this, he immediately came in and got supplies to board the screen.
The mink returned before he did. He opened...
I saw them today on Cackle. I believe females were under $10. They also offer another chocolate brown egg layer. I forget the name but that's almost $20 a chick.
We are putting up poultry netting as a deterrent. We plan to hang pie tins from it. Can Hawks tell if netting is burstable or not? This stuff would definitely break if they tried it.
We have some deer fencing we can move to the top too (we're getting hardware cloth tomorrow to wrap the run).
No tracks in the snow
Nothing dug in
This happened when darkness was just beginning to fall
The kill happened in the duck run and was (relatively) clean
We're keeping the ducks in the pen 24/7 until we take measures to prevent this happening again. I got poultry netting to put on top of the run...
I haven't separated her yet, so I don't know if she's pooping. I've never seen her poop, and never seen her eat or drink on her own. She needs me to hand feed her or hold the food/water dish up at her neck height. I'm going to make her her own brooder when I get home.
The only video I took is too large to upload.
Here's a pic I took yesterday as soon as I got home. Healthy duck is bottom right. Quackers is right next to her.
I think she definitely has vision impairment, but she reacts to movement. It's just very delayed.
She ate from my hand a little last night and this morning, or rather she nibbled but didn't seem able to get any actual food.
I'm going to try working with her a few more days. Then unfortunately...
I left a bowl of wet food, but the healthy ducks are going for it. Quackers is still chirping away.
Would you recommend separating her from the others so she has a better chance of getting at the food? There's plenty of food and room now, but the other ducks knock her out of the way like a fly...
I wouldn't be too concerned about her walking weirdly yet. I'd imagine the wound makes walking unpleasant even if it's superficial.
I second the antibiotic ointment- for a human I'd advise keeping it covered with ointment although I realize a duck may not be compliant in keeping a bandage on.
We just bought 10 khaki campbell ducklings from Metzer Farms. They arrived last Thursday. They were shipped Monday. When they arrived, the GroGel cup that Metzer placed was completely empty- literally not a drop left. But the ducks seemed okay, and fast forward to today: 9 are doing great...
