Good deal. I feed them some table scraps as well as any veggies we have to cull from the garden along with the feed. I'll have to look for the oyster shells at the co-op.
Just noticed a few of our Austra White hens have bright red combs! I'm hoping we'll get some eggs soon. Should I start giving them layer feed now or wait until they lay? They're right around 13/14 weeks.
Carbaryl ("Sevin") is the only pesticide I know of for squash bug, if you are ok with using pesticides. Problem is, it doesn't work very well on adults so it has to be applied several times or when the nymphs are present. I would suggest hand pulling them and looking for eggs, as somebody else...
I know a guy here at State who's a poultry judge. I'll ask him if he knows anything more. The vet school here is having an open house tomorrow, so maybe I'll see some extension agents or poultry science people there that I can ask.
I built our raised beds a couple of weeks ago, but we haven't planted anything outside yet. We've had to downsize a bit this year since we moved, but we're going to plant a couple of tomatoes, bush variety green beans, squash and zucchini, some greens, and an okra or two. It's been such a cool...
As Tammy N mentioned above, potatoes sold for eating are typically treated in order to prevent sprouting so they are not good for planting. If I remember correctly, potatoes also like a relatively acidic soil. If you're in a drier part of Oklahoma, you probably have alkaline soils.
I'm living in MS now, but I was born in Olney and will be taking over the family farm in Noble in a few years! Maybe I'll see some of you in the future!
Just built some raised beds for this year. I've never used them before, but we're renting this year and can't till up the yard. We'll see how it goes, I guess!
