she came back this afternoon, i caught her and locked her in the coop.
i'm not sure about finding her nest though. do you think if she find it back, she'd get right back at it?
now that we have her back, i'll have to have that bird and bee's talk with her
yes, if she went broody, it will be in vain. her sister always went broody on the nesting box so we had no disappearing issues with her. we got them as day old, a dozen of them. ended up with 10 roosters. we tried to keep 2 but they were too agressive on the kids, that's why there's no roos...
Hi,
i'm rather puzzled. yesterday, i was outside in my garden/backyard with my baby around 6 pm and both my barred rock hens were around. about 8:30 when i went to check on them and feed and refresh water for the new chicks, there was only one hen in the coop. they've been free ranging for 2...
Hi, i have 2 barred rock hen and 2 roosters. a few days ago we started to notice one of our hen sit in the box every time we go in. we got them as day old around the 24th of june 2011 and they started laying last fall. she sit low in the box and just make gentle, quiet clucks. and since that...

Wow.. and I thought our Barred Rock ratio was goofy. We got 12 BR and only 1 was supposed to be a rooster, but we ended up with 3 roosters. (I don't count my worthless Phoenix since he doesn't do much for the flock except harass the ladies and eat the food.)
3 roosters wouldn't have...
we drove our roosters away this morning to be processed. we only need to pick em up saturday when we go to the farmer's market. i'm glad i don't have to do the killing myself but i found out the price went up. it was around $3.50 when i first asked and it's now $4.25 kinda cuts into the...

yes, they are the only 2 hens we have but we're planning on getting more in the spring as our original goal is to have 12 hens... our kids eat a lot of eggs. there might be a bit of pecking here and there but so far, i find that they are pretty much all quite well behaved. when i asked...
i have 12 barred rock, 2 turned out to be hens and 10 roosters. we're thinking about keeping 2 roosters with our hens and getting rid of the other 8. they are not show bird, just commercial grade but i'd still like to cultivate them to have a nice flock. we're taking them to be butchered in...
thanks, i'm glad it's just a matter of giving them time to learn
i moved my chicks in their coop as the storm started. i got drenched but i kept them as dry as i could i guess they'll be spending the next few days in their coop... weather forecast is all rain as far as we can see
thanks.
one more question, it's been very rainy lately, as a matter of fact, there's a thunderstorm brewing and the run is not connected to the coop at the moment. we moved it so they could have fresh grass... even tho there's a tarp over part of the run, should i move them to their coop...
about 4 days ago, we finally finished the coop and run and got the chicks out of our house. we only made one door to the run and realized that it was difficult to move the run around, need 2 people to do it and 2 people are not always available to move it around morning and evening to let them...
i was looking for a different way to water my young flock and i've asked someone at the farmer's supply store if a bunny water bottle would work and i was told "no" but today i decided to give it a try anyway. it didn't take long for a few of them to start pecking at it and figured that water...
thanks all for your input!
after much debating, and the possibility that if they don't like the size of our movable coops and peck each other in an outright war... we finally decided to go with converting about 12x15 of our garage into a permanent dwelling for them with a summer days moveable...
