    Pasty Butt? Or something worse?

It does sound like vent gleet! From what I've read, adult chickens don't really get pasty butt, which is the vent being blocked by feces. Instead, they get gleet which is a fungal infection of the tract. It is totally treatable, though...

Help with sexing? Belgian Bantams, Wyandotte X's, Pekin

Yes, the Pekin is definitely throwing me off! I posted while s/he was younger and most people thought pullet, but now I've noticed some feathers looking a little too pointed. At least I should know the answer to the Pekin Question fairly soon!

Help with sexing? Belgian Bantams, Wyandotte X's, Pekin

I'm back...again! Still not confident at sexing chicks at all, so hoping I can get some help on a few! I'm guessing 'pullet' on a lot of them which is making me suspicious  Also, if anybody knows what their colours are, please let me know! (eg. Laced, Quail etc.) #1 - Wyandotte X (~8...

    Belgian Bantams - d'Uccles

d'Uccles are so tricky! I've been thinking cockerel too (sadly...) but I just keep hoping those sickle/hackle feathers don't show up :fl

    Belgian Bantams - d'Uccles

I think these guys are all at an age now where it should be a little more obvious - or so I'm hoping! They are Porcelain d'Uccle x Mottled d'Uccle/Japanese Bantam (mum is a cross!) I've never had to sex Frizzles before so...I have no idea where to start. All have the same parents - we just...

Belgian d'Uccle X (and a Pekin!) - colour and sex?

Hi there! We've got a number of d'Uccle Cross chicks hatched, and I'm terrible at sexing them. Their father is a purebred Porcelain d'Uccle, and their mums (1 frizzle, 1 smooth) are Japanese Bantam x d'Uccle (though, not sure how much d'Uccle since their legs are nearly feather-less!) I've...

Thoughts on what killed chick: dog, bird, hens? (Warning: photos)

Firstly, we're located in Tasmania, Australia. We don't have foxes here, or the 'usual suspects' like quolls or Tasmanian Devils. Our property backs onto grazing paddocks, so no real forested areas. We do, however, have numerous birds of prey species in the area - goshawks, falcons and...

    What colour is he?

We aren't 100% sure on breed but we do know he has Araucana (UK/AU type) and possibly Sussex? We have two of his sisters; one is a kind of laced pattern and the other is self-lavender. He was completely black/blue as a chick and has gradually grown these gold feathers. We're just curious as to...

Hens becoming sick while taking antibiotics.

Just an update! Those with 'puffy faces' are looking much more normal today! One of the hens that wasn't sick yesterday is coming down with it though - I checked her on the roost last night and she had a bubbly eye and some discharge in one nostril. However, she's not acting too badly - just a...

Seeping & Dirty Vents ~ What to do?

It looks like vent gleet! Vent gleet is a type of yeast infection. It can be treated in much the same way as thrush and other fungal infections. You can give them oral Mycostatin / Nystatin and can also apply an ointment to their backside and vent. It's a good idea to give them a warm soak...

Hens becoming sick while taking antibiotics.

Thank you for the response! And sorry for the delay in replying! Our older hens all sleep on a roost whereas our younger one's still sleep in a big pile in the garden (no matter how hard we try to move them!). Both have dirt/straw floors so I've scrubbed clean the roost and have been raking...

Hens becoming sick while taking antibiotics.

I considered dosage so I think I'll spend some extra time preparing the next batch and make sure it's perfect. I also thought that it might be viral as well, which puts me in a pickle! If it is, I'm sure the antibiotics aren't helping but if it isn't and I suddenly stop giving them...well, not...

Hens becoming sick while taking antibiotics.

Hi (again!)! We're on day three of treating our flock with tetracycline for a respiratory issue. It's being administered through their water sources. I'm worried something is going wrong with the antibiotics. One of our boys kills and tries to eat sparrows. We think he must have caught...

Back again: youngster with chronic poopy butt (>3 months of this)

Thanks for the suggestions guys! We haven't tried increasing his probiotics drastically - our flock gets some in their water but we're thinking it's time to isolate him and really treat him. He's a pleasant boy so even though we can't keep him, I'd prefer him to get healthy so he can go to a pet...

Back again: youngster with chronic poopy butt (>3 months of this)

In December, I posted here about a young rooster with what we thought was poopy butt. Well, things haven't really changed at all for him despite everything. He's now about 5-6 months old. Basic symptoms are that he's got non-stop diarrhea. Sometimes he gets constipated and then the next day...
