    First Egg Countdown

Since day one, 5 days ago, they have laid an egg a day! I thought they were supposed to start off slow? Only 2 of my three have started laying, but I've gotten 2 a day everyday! Is this rare? I'm so proud of my girls!

    First Egg Countdown

WOW! you're egg looks so different from mine! My Barred Rock laid her first today too, and its much smaller and much darker....the variation is so strange...I wonder if, when my other two start laying, their eggs will all look a bit different until they really get going

    First Egg Countdown

got my first egg TODAY! Came home from work at about 4:30, and as I have been doing for the last week in anticipation, I opened up the hen house and looked it. No egg on the ground (I kinda figured the first ones would be in random places). Then I opened the nesting box and there it was! A tiny...

They don't seem to eat their grit...

my chickens have a tray of grit available to them in their run next to their food and water, but they don't seem to eat it. They have access to dirt on the ground in their run, but it's soft soil that I don't think would function as grit. I'm worried they're not getting enough grit, but how do i...

    First night outside questions

Thanks so much everyone! Very helpful. Especially you, Steve, Its nice that you know what kind of weather I'm dealing with etc. I went out around 8 this morning and let them into the run to get food and water. When I opened the door I half expected them to come racing out, but they didn't. I...

    First night outside questions

So tonight I am leaving the girls outside in their coop for the first time. All week they've spent the days out in the run and I've brought them in to sleep in the brooder when it gets dark. They're 6 weeks old now (3 Barred Rocks), so I think they're ready. It just got dark (its about 7pm) so I...

Waterer and Feeder for coop vs brooder

I'm about to move my girls outside into their coop, and had a few questions about feeders and waterers. 1. should they upgrade to a bigger size? I have those quart-sized upside down mason jar feeder (with several small holes) and waterer. Are those ok for the coop? Do they need bigger...

maybe bored? cold? not enough space?

"fully feathered" means they have no more fuzz anywhere? Cause they're looking pretty feathered, just a few spots that are still a bit fuzzy, or a few feathers that still have some fuzz on the tips. Also, It's gotten to be around 55 during the day here, is putting them outside (when they've been...

for those that use deep litter method...please advise me

Do you all have the same litter material in the hen house and the run? I have three chickens in a small covered coop/run in my backyard. It seems that folks like using pine shavings, but no one has said whether they put the shavings in the run area as well. I saw some folks worrying about the...

maybe bored? cold? not enough space?

The brooder is a "grand wardrobe" box from uhaul. It's like 2' wide x 4'long. I have 3 chicks. I have two perches in there and give them a snack once a day. I've had a heat lamp hanging from the ceiling on one side of the box with a shady area on the other side. I've been raising the lamp a bit...

maybe bored? cold? not enough space?

My 5 week old chicks have been very noisy lately. They eye the top of the brooder, and will jump into the screen I have on the top. I'm worried about them. Are they just outgrowing the brooder and getting antsy? I'm not sure what I can do for them since two aren't quite feathered out. I don't...
