i noticed one of my cochins has these black specks on her comb and one of her wattles. it doesn't seem to be dirt or blood, as i tried to wash it off and the spots remained. i also put vaseline on her comb thinking it was frostbite (it's been about 12 degrees F here at night, and my 4 hens sleep...
OK, now it's worse. I just noticed that the feathers around her vent are all wet and when I picked her up to look more closely, I noticed the same fishy smell, only much stronger! Is she sick? She's still acting completely normal. What can I do?
My BR did that too! For hours at a time. I live in suburbia as well and couldn't stand the idea of rehoming her (she's so sweet), so every time she did it I'd go out with a rake and bang it on the ground in front of her and she would run back into the coop. It only took 3 days of doing this...
I actually did isolate her, and she's eating nothing but pellets and a few handfuls of grass, and I gather the eggs right after she lays them, so I know they're not old. It's so odd! Maybe I will try the antibiotics...
It sounds weird, but I had a pullet do the same thing over the summer, so I Googled "droopy chickens" and giving them live culture plain yogurt was suggested often. I gave it a try and it did the trick (well, either that or she just happened to get better right after I gave it to her). It can't...
Recently all of the eggs that my Polish lays smell like fish once I crack them open. I'm aware of the genetic mutation in brown egg layers, but I'm not finding much information on white egg layers regarding the stench. Further, she began laying about 5 months ago, but her eggs have only starting...
When we rehomed to of our hens, the other two stopped laying for almost a month (they had all been together since they hatched). I agree with the others, it's just stress. They'll start laying eventually!
just our cat, but she and the chickens are very friendly with each other. i have 2 hens together, the polish and a barred rock, and we're getting three more at the end of may. i just don't know. she does seem to stop when i go out and talk to her, the problem is she starts up again as soon as i...
My Polish has recently started screaming for hours on end. She starts around 8 am and doesn't stop until noon. It's nonstop, no joke. She also usually starts up again around 3 for an hour or so. She has food, water, shade, she's laying regularly, looks healthy. Nothing has changed in her...
i have some left over from when they were picking on her, so i'll definitely try that. thanks! i only have one other hen (had to rehome the others because they were too loud - i live in the city and didn't realize hens could make so much noise!), so if it is feather pulling, it's got to be her...
my polish is losing feathers above and around her tail in sort of a triangular pattern. she was picked on by my other hens about two months ago and lost the feathers on a small part of her wing and on her back. the wound has since healed and there are small, dark pin feathers growing in, but it...
Thanks everyone for the information and welcome! I think I'll just stick with the two chickens I have for now, even though I'm dying for more. I don't want to take a chance with the noise at this point. Hopefully we'll move somewhere with more land soon so I can have a large flock without...
