    tractors and ducks???

I tractored some ducks in a 4 x 8 tractor. I just gave them a 3 gallon waterer and a big rubber bowl of food, both of which I topped off whenever they needed. They did just fine in there. They ruined my grass real quick so I had to keep them off the lawn and under a grove of pine trees I have. I...

    Turkey not Laying

When do turkeys start laying? I have a Narragansett hen that will be a year old in April and I thought she'd be laying by now. All my poultry lay eggs in the coop and unless I am mistaking the turkey eggs for duck eggs, I see none. I see her and my tom breeding so that's not a problem. Could she...

Help on newborn Nigerian Dwarf goat-- Emergency!

Quote: Have you done a soil test? Our soil is deficient in selenium, which makes their grass have less selenium. According that map, we are not deficient, but in fact we are. No, but my goats and sheep mainly get their roughage from hay as I don't have space for pasture. I used to buy locally...

Help on newborn Nigerian Dwarf goat-- Emergency!

A word on selenium. I think some people get a little crazy with this stuff and Bo-Se. When I first got into goats, all the breeders told me I had to supplement selenium because "our area is deficient" and from what I hear from people online every area is apparently deficient but this map...

    keeping bees and allergies

If your main goal is pollination, you could look into Mason Bees. I don't remember if they sting but they are tiny and non-aggressive. However, they don't produce wax and honey like honeybees.

I burn everything I or something else won't eat. So feathers, carcasses, innards. This is my preference but I wouldn't feed the intestines to anything because, I mean, they're full of poo and bacteria. You can cook with the feet but I don't' really care for them or too wash them so I just grill...

I have a DAIRY SHEEP QUESTION(yes, that's right, DAIRY SHEEP)

Quote: This depends a lot on the breed. Generally sheep have a really short lactation period like about 90 days but the best dairy sheep can go for up to 6 months or more. Compare that to a goat or cow which you usually milk for 10 months. There is some info here...

I have a DAIRY SHEEP QUESTION(yes, that's right, DAIRY SHEEP)

I've never milked a sheep but I have been interested in doing it since I got goats for milk. So this past spring I got a couple katahdins. They are a meat breed but easy to come by in my area and supposedly provide enough milk for triplets so I am going to try milking them when they lamb in a...

So, here we go. Sheep, goats, or one of each?

If you can only get 2 animals, I might stick with one breed. I have nigerian dwarfs then I got a katahdin. She kind've bonded to them but she was so loud, She was louder than my goats. I then took her to a breeder to get bred and also bought one of their ewes. My ewe and the other ewe bonded...

    Turkey Housing

I ended up raising some turkeys in my chicken tractor's unintentionally last year. They were free ranging for their first few months, then they started going in the street while I wasn't home and the only thing I had to contain them was the chicken tractors. They are 4 x 8, and a little over 2...

    Wood stove pellets for bedding?

I also use equine fresh for cat litter and in the trays for my wire bottomed brooders. I think they are superior than any litter i've tried, i mean if they can handle horse pee then they can handle pretty much anything and the used bedding can go right in the yard. I looked at the pricing...

Can you MAKE MONEY with chickens?

Quote: I agree with you 100%. I don't think you can include taxes and mortgage in your profit calculations UNLESS you bought the home or separate land specifically to raise chickens. Otherwise, you just can't really break things down like that. You could however include utilities as you might...

    Question regarding Hay?

I figured out the differences between hay types a while back. I only need to know for my goats though and all I know is they will not eat timothy. Sometimes it just looks like straw to me. I just bought some all alfalfa bales recently to feed m,y goats and I can now actually SEE the difference...
