We had some silkies and they were the cutest things. As chicks they were the first to spot anything edible making them great foragers. They were bright and inquisitive. I know people can spend time with them and make them very good pets.
Also, I bought some after hatching a mixed group...
I bought some Welsummer hatching eggs but only one hatched (I was too impatient three years ago and kept candling the eggs) and of course it was a rooster.
That summer I hatched many roosters and most were purebreds (large variety) and I hated to give them up but slowly did. I kept the...
Thank you so much Wannabe. I think mine must be mixed with something, but we'll see. The toes are a good indication too, and mine only has four.
I don't care if she isn't pure after all. It's just good to know in case I ever sell or give away its offspring.
But it's fun to know what I...

That's funny, I never even checked the photos myself. But I did check her physically and she has four toes. The feathers on her legs kind of obscure her feet a bit, so I wasn't sure if another toe was under all that or not.

That's what I suspected - a cross. I wasn't able to count her toes, but will in just a bit when I go close the chickens up for the night. She's a bit shy yet.
I thought she was a bit too light and should have a beard by now - but I've never raised a Faverolle yet so I wasn't sure...
Hello,
This one (the very light bird) hatched from an egg marked SF, so I assumed it was a Faverolle. Is she? She's very lovely but no beard yet. She's 12 weeks old today. I tried to count her toes but couldn't get close enough, she is shy yet. I'll check her tonight.
I wish the gray...

Thank you very much. I believe the little light colored hen that I thought came out of an egg marked as a Faverolle is the one laying the blue eggs as of last week. I found a blue egg shortly after she was in the nest box this morning. So an EE mix would make sense. I'll start...
Hello again,
I just looked up Buff Brahmas Rareroo, and the gold hen looked just like one as a chick, it was very attractive. And she really resembles one now, but definitely has something else mixed in there.
Thank you very much.
Lisa
Thank you so much for the fast replies and compliments.
I just checked and the supposed "Faverolle hen" only has four toes. I currently have a Faverolle chick from another hatch that looks much more like what I expect a Faverolle to look like, but no beard. I'll have to research that one...
Hello,
I can't determine what breed this little gold hen is and it's leading me to question two other birds I thought I had straight.
I hatched her in April and she is the only one I can't identify (so I thought). I received a bunch of eggs that were pure breeds and with them I hatched...
Official Dove names would be:
Mourning Dove
Rock Dove
White Winged Dove
Eurasian Collared Dove
Spotted Dove
Inca Dove
Common Ground Dove
Ruddy Ground Dove
White Tipped Dove
Ringed Turtle Dove
Spotted Dove
In your area the White Winged Dove is prevalent so I would think "White Wing" would be a...
Hello,
I've been using this site weekly since March but never had the need to post. Thank you for all of the useful information. I haven't needed any other resource for raising the chicks I bought 3/21/08 and everything has gone perfectly smoothly. Except for the hawks.
I haven't been...
