Purplepillbug73's Duck Page Khaki-Campbell hens: Oona, Cortana, Morgana, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather They arrived on July 8th, 2009 and I am extremely satisfied with my duck-raising experience so far. I can tell all of them apart except for Flora and Fauna, they're like twins. Just when I...

Whose Been Married The Longest On BYC?

I've only been married 5 years, but I'm only 22 and everyone thought we wouldn't last 6 months. Ha! You guys who have stuck with it for so long, you are my heroes.

    STRICT RULE no pitbulls Period

When I was 8 years old, I had a pitbull mix named Copper and she was the most protective dog I've ever known. We had chickens and rabbits, and if they ever got loose, she would protect them from our other dogs. She also used to sleep with our cats and our Rooster, Fluffy, used to chase cars...

How often do you give your ducks swimming water?

During the summer, I would fill up the kiddie pool every other day and dump it the next morning so they had one day on, one day off. But now that its getting cold, I've been filling it up only once or twice a week. Is that enough? How frequently do you let your ducks go swimming?

    101 reasons we love ducks

You guys beat me to it. There's nothing left to say. My favorite things about my ducks are: 37. The way they stand on their tiptoes, flap their wings & then wiggle their tails 38. When ducklings do #37 114. When you are spraying them with the hose, how they bite at the water! and...

    khaki campbells

Mine will fly across tmy backyard about six feet from the ground, but I think they mainly do this just to stretch a little. They could definitely fly over the fence, but they don't have that intention.

Please help me choose a breed- Vote for either Khaki or Appleyard plz!

I would say Khakis because I absolutely love mine, but I never had the intention of them raising ducklings and I haven't had them long enough to know if they will go broody or not (I have heard conflicting answers). If I was going to get a different breed, I would probably go with Appleyard, as...

    Rabid Duck????

Wow. I found a dead pigeon in the backyard about a month ago and I thought the cat had been back there. It never crossed my mind that the ducks may have killed it.

My son has solved our ordinance issue!!!! (joke)

I don't know about chickens, but I've definitely met some geese that were better guarddogs than actual guardDOGS.

    Water at Night

Wow. Wifezilla, that is really a brilliant idea and you know, I never would have thought of it. Now, I'm going to have to give that a try.

Plants ducks and geese don't touch.

My ducks love grape tomatoes, and they've eaten smaller, green tomatoes off of other plants. They've tried the leaves but don't like them. My ducks won't eat morning glory, honeysuckle, or sweet pea (I have all three growing all over the backyard). They will eat carrot tops but not carrots...

    Water at Night

My ducks are 11 weeks old and they have access to water from dawn til dusk. I only give them food during the day also. They still seem okay without food or water at night and their droppings in the coop are still pretty watery. I think I'll go ahead and keep giving them food and water only...

    Water at Night

I've stopped giving my ducks water at night in an effort to keep their bedding from getting so gross so fast. They seem to be doing fine, but I was wondering if this was okay. They would drink the water at night, but was it because they needed it or because it was there?

    Feeding Ducks

Have you heard of hardware disease? Its when ducks eat little pieces of metal like nails or coins. The "hardware" then leaches toxins into the duck's body, poisoning it over a period of days or weeks. Then the duck will usually have problems walking and just keel over. The duck sometimes...

    Question: Alternative Duckling Diets

Thank you guys so much for your input. I did go ahead and buy some chicken starter. I don't think I'll have a really big problem with natural proteins considering the local infestation of snails and pillbugs was one of the reasons I got the ducks. I also have an abundance of red worms in my...
