Fastest to waddle towards food yes... and fat enough to shove everyone else out of the way. :P
Her husband is about the same age as her... and he's a skinny boy compared to her.
Reporting back... in this drought (hardly any rain in 4 months) the duck area of the backyard is actually the only lush green part. :D I move their enclosure once a week and use the water from the kiddy pool to water it. So all good.
I moved their enclosure away from the trashed area... I hope they don't trash another part of the backyard or I swear to god we're gonna have crispy duck for dinner pronto. I had to hose and scrub down the house. For lack of a better description they must have gone nuts today and humped and dug...
Okay... I'm going to report on recent developments. Everything was fine this week... until today. I was happy to see that the turf didn't suffer too much. There were two minor holes in the turf - duck work. We were away for the weekend and our friend fed the animals, locked them in and let them...
Our friend who took care of our ducks & chickens over the weekend while we were away. He found the first duck egg this morning. It's larger and more pale than the other eggs we got so far so I'm pretty sure it's a duck egg.
He also observed them this morning and after a bit of confusion Donald...
I'm relatively new to having chickens. We live in a densely populated inner city suburb on a 600m2 block of land with a new house and subtropical landscaping. My hens have a hen house where they sleep at night and during the day they can roam around the area in front of their coop. I fenced off...
That explains the madness we had in the last 2 weeks... one of the chickens was ultra cranky & loud. This morning, all quiet & peaceful and behold the glory there was a tiny egglet in the nest box.
I think we have a match made in heaven... Donald paired up with his ducky (that was quick!), they waddle around together and the chooks keep to themselves. There's a bit of quacking, clucking and chattering going on in the mornings when I let them out and in the evenings just before the sun goes...
That's the plan... get Donald a matching companion so he focuses on her, and they hopefully both settle in. Alternative is to rehome both of them as a pair.
I let them out this morning and they are relatively quiet, apart from occasional quacking. The lady duck had some blood on her nose this...
My flock is now 5-6 months old... and surprise surprise - the duck turned out to be a MALE, no doubt about it, so renamed him to Donald. All seemed good and he got along well with the chickens. A friend built me a coop designed specifically for Donald with a flat ramp so it's easy for him to...
My duck & chooks are now 3 months old and live in the backyard. I fenced off part of it to keep them off the patio but they seem to find a way around it and go on a poop-a-thon :) Overall I'm very glad I got them and looking forward to them starting to lay. New coop is also under construction. I...
