I have three bloodlines currently - jumbo wilds from Myshire Farm, Italians from K Dale Coturnix, and a cross of the two. The Myshire birds are huge and very calm, the ones from K Dale Coturnix are flightier but slightly better layers, and I’m hoping the cross combines the best traits of both.

I like perches to be at about my chest level so they’re easy to access if I need to take one off the roost at night.
A thought... if you put plywood on top of those rafters you’ll create a second story storage space as well as blocking them from roosting out of reach.
I haven’t seen studies specific to chicken perches, but there are a number that have been done over the years on cage birds.
