    Surprise babies -- need help!

Thank you everyone! We managed to catch Mama and Babies under the coop and move them into the brooder box. Everyone is doing great! I gave them scrambled eggs until we got ahold of some chick starter. Mom seemed the hungriest of course! Babies are adorably copying her as she eats, learning how...

    Surprise babies -- need help!

Went out to my coop this morning and heard peeping. Got down and looked under the coop to find one of my girls has been hiding eggs and today is hatch day -- surprise! Up to seven babies so far. 😲 Here's where I need help. I don't have any chick starter feed and the closest feed store is 80...

Emergency in El Paso! Help if you can!

HELP! Hatchery has sent my chicks to El Paso (300 miles away) where they're stuck and going to probably die before they can be delivered on Monday. Anyone in EL Paso area who can take them? Don't want to see the peepers die if it can be avoided. Thanks for any help or advice. -Sara

This pullet looks like a chipmunk!

During my egg check this morning, I noticed that one of my buff Brahma pullets has some severe swelling going on. Both earlobes are swollen, making her look like a chipmunk or a kid with mumps. No other birds are affected and she has been quarantined in the sick pen. I can't be sure when it...

Lots of CROWS! Are they a pest to chickens?

Crows, buzzards, vultures and other carrion-eating birds do not generally kill their prey. They are the clean up crew after something has already died. There are always exceptions, though, and I suppose a chick or an egg might be vulnerable. I'd be interested to hear if anyone on this forum...

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

Most of mine have been carried away by hawks, etc. Dogs have damaged a lot of my birds, but only actually killed one. I voted bobcat, though, because my neighbor lost thirteen in one night to a bobcat last month. I've never heard of so many killed at once before.

skinned alive -update 18/4/2011 the update we didnt want :(

I live in a very dangerous environment from a chicken's perspective, and I have had the misfortune of finding birds injured like this one. This is the worst I've seen, but this is what I would do: Isolate the bird in a sick pen (which you've already done) Treat the injury with antiseptic...

Where to buy late season chicks...?

Howdy y'all! I'm looking to buy some day-olds to replenish my coop (bit of a predator problem this summer!) but most hatcheries seem out of stock for the year. Anyone know of hatcheries that will ship chicks in sept/oct? Thanks in advance, Sara ¡Viva Terlingua!

    advice ordered cornish X chicks

Buy a lot of food. They eat like it's going out of fashion. And they grow super fast, so make sure you are ready to move them into bigger spaces as they grow. Did I mention you'll need a lot of food? Good luck (they are often mean, by the way, and peck the hand that feeds)

    McMurray's cornish x - are they really?

My sister in law gets these birds every year for meat. They are cornish crossed with rocks, but I'm pretty sure the breeding is selected at least 2 generations back to get the birds that grow so fast. Sis-in-law can barely keep them until butchering date because they get so big so fast, and...

    stupid tsc..

Wow, the one I just visited in FL already had birds on clearance. Hopefully yours will at least take better care of the ducks. Every time I have seen them in the store they were out of water and the bedding was gross.

The Reasons NOT to feed chickens green tomatoe plants or Dried Beans

Wow, that is an epic list. I will definitely bookmark it for reference, though mostly I have relied on the birds themselves knowing what not to eat. Free ranging has its benefits. Thanks for the info!

    Feathered Fun Time

Onion infused eggs? Sounds great! Good to find out that they will eat them, too. I know I can't give onions to my dog, so it will be good to have a backup "disposal" system! Thanks for posting that. -Sara

    The Anime/Manga Thread!

Oh man, I weaned myself off Anime and Manga 5 years ago ... and now since I've read this post all I want to do is read the ending of Inu Yasha! I have the entire Ranma manga on CD, though it's been buried in my anime box for years now. Anyone know where I can read the IY graphic novels online...
