In the beginning, there was darkness... 3/2/11: Asked landlord if it was OK to get a few chickens - should hear back soon! 3/17/11: Got the OK from the landlord and the neighbors, permit application is with the city. 3/19/11: Oops, couldn't wait for the city to respond: got triplets...

    Chicken tractor people.....a question

I can't answer yet, because I have yet to get one, but my landlord requires that I have a tractor instead of a stationary coop so I'll be following this thread! One thing that I'm not looking forward to is having to go out in the muddy back yard to move the thing around. (We have nice grass but...

    New chicks - and socializing!

Quote: It sounds like this is my best bet too. If only the RIR knew how to get the worms from my hand - the other two are quick to snap them up but the RIR doesn't see them unless they're on the ground. Silly little thing.

    New chicks - and socializing!

Quote: I feel like it might be traumatic for the skittish one to be held; I've heard it's good not to hold chickens too closely but I have to in order to keep her in my hand, she flaps around so much. She does calm down after a minute, though; is it best to just hold her more tightly until she...

    New chicks - and socializing!

I had to share - I got my 4-week-old pullets on Saturday, and they're in a brooder in my garage awaiting feathers and a coop. They have tentative names (Eulalie, Amaryllis and Zaneeta - from The Music Man!) but they haven't stuck yet. These are my first chickens. Front to back, they're Rhode...

Aww, the Australorp looks like a little feathery dinosaur!

    pre harness work with chicken

You might look at clicker training and some of their ideas. Though it's primarily considered a technique for training dogs, lots of animals respond quite well to it and the fact that it's all positive reinforcement makes it a good fit for pretty much any animal!

    My first coop build

Quote: It looks great! I wish that my hobbies would translate to working well with wood, as your metalworking seems to have done. Me, I crochet - having a coop made of yarn doesn't sound like it'd work all that well!

    Retail Coops

Quote: Oh, that's really pretty! I'll have to see if they ship.

    Retail Coops

Quote: I think I'll have to keep an eye on it - I've seen a few pretty decently-priced coops so far but they're all an hour or more away; I suppose that's good since I only just had the property management company ask the owner if it was OK and I'd hate to miss a good (and close) deal!

    Retail Coops

Quote: True! I'd have to figure out how to tow it but other than that it might be nice; and it sounds like it'd be taller too which is nice since I'm tall... Thanks!

    Retail Coops

Quote: Quite true - I am always a little wary about buying things sight-unseen, especially if I'm trying to make sure it's not just nice-looking but also sturdy and predator-proof! I'm concerned about building my own - I think I may be able to do it at some point but right now I don't trust...
