Uh Oh - is this a rooster?

The black one is a boy and your other one is a girl.

    Wood Ashes?

A lot of animals will eat charcoal, it helps get rid of toxins in their systems. My chickens love to dust bath in the wood ash I pull out of the BBQ. Yes, for a day or two you have a bunch of gray chickens running around, but they seem to enjoy it and I am sure it helps to keep the bugs off...

What in the world did my hen just make?

Looks like a soft shell egg. May just be a glich in the egg works there. I have a few hens that would pass eggs like that now and then. Just keep any eye her, if she keeps laying them then you will want to look at cause factors, ie. stress, worms, ect. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless...

    We slaughtered our first chicken.....

I soak mine in a buttermilk brine for a day or so, it helps to lossen up the meat. It works much better then a water or -I hate to say it- a beer based brine. look it up on Google for a recipe.

What gender is this Barred Rock Chick?

Looks like a crockerel to me as well. It could be a Black-Sex-Link with it having the dark feathering, but sometimes you can get a dark male BR.

When can I let the babies out with the rest of the flock? *PICS*

If it's only 2 feet off the floor just make sure you have a good layer of bedding like pine shavings on the floor and they will just jump down when the hen calls them. Mine do it all the time, even higher nest. As long as the floor is soft they will be okay. If you can't let yourself let them...

Let Mother Hen Look After Them

Letting the hen hatch the eggs is always the best way. The drawback to hatching is you don't know what gender you will get. As for feed and water you can get a chick feeder and waterer -is that the correct spelling for that word?- from the feed store or make one and get some chick starter feed...

Let Mother Hen Look After Them

This can be done, but a few things have to fall into place for it to work. First it's going to depend on the Hen if she will accept them or not. I have one hen I can do this with, but most I have not been able to -Timing plays a big roll here. You need to make sure the hen has been sitting at...

What color eggs do you think?

So green, green/brown or just brown. That is what I was thinking, but wanted to ask. Thanks.

What color eggs do you think?

They look like all the Ameraucana pictures I have looked at, but they probably lean more toward being EE's. So yes, they probably are.

What color eggs do you think?

I have three Ameraucana/EE hens. Two are pure white, one is white with buff coloring on her head, sholders and chest, all three have blue/green legs and lay a blueish green egg, more green then blue. They mated with my two roosters. One is a Light Brahma and the other is a Light brahma/Barred...

My broody hen and her chicks

I have a hen that just hatched 7 on the 26th and its been cold and rainy here too -upper 30's and low 40's. She and her brood are in the coop with the rest of the flock and they can go in and out into the yard anytime they want. Mother hen has not taken them out yet and I expect she will when...

    My egg is cracked.

Wow, how did you get your wooden chicken to lay an egg? Mine just stands around and does nothing.
