If they have a dirty butt that's supposed to mean they have pasty butt, I think, and they will die, but can poop just stick to the feathers back there even if they don't actually have pasty butt?
So I check these butts every day, 96 butts (we lost 4 chicks). Many of the chicks have poop on the back of their butt, but when I look at the butt the dried poop is not closing up the opening. Hindsight, I would have put vaseline on all of their butts as I unpacked them into the brooder, is...
I used grogel for these. I bought one packet, mixed it with 1/2 cup water and gave a big dollup to each level of the brooder, they LOVED it!!! I also scrambled them some organic eggs and mixed in plain organic yogurt and give them big dollups of that. They peck at it and shake their heads.
yes there are trays. no poo falls on the ones below. sorry for no caps I'm holding a baby. now I see some chicks have poo stuck to their butt, been cleaning butts all night
I took out the burlap. it was filthy. i change their water out every few hours. they don't seem to mind the wire floor. I put a length of paper towel in each level to have something to sprinkle food on. They sure loved that gro-gel that came with the shipment, I wonder how to make it.
I am concerned about their feet. My brooder is 5 levels and has a wire bottom. The wire forms about 1/2 inch square pattern. It seems pretty rough to me. When I put them in the brooder yesterday I put them all on burlap. I laid the burlap over the wire, but now the burlap is all poo pooed...
I got a st run of Barred Plymouth Rock chicks. We have them in a brooder and they are warm. They are all walking around eating and drinking. I have already changed the water once because they poo in it. I noticed some chicks laying down and thought they were dead. Are they just sleeping...
Yes, I have room for 100 chickens. I need to post pics of my coop. I asked my husband for a chicken coop and 6000.00 dollars later, we have a coop that he calls the chicken taj mahal. I didn't want something so fancy, but he says that the coons will get in and kill them all unless it's done...
The chicks arrived. We have a 5 level metal brooder. A good portion of the chicks are huddled together. I keep separating them and making them go eat and drink. They are all barred plymouth rock chicks. I added a little Bragg's ACV, and some sugar to the water. I also mixed up a packet of...
My husband says he can't get the heaters to come on in the brooder now. So, I guess we will have baby chicks in the bathtub in our warmest bathroom. It's a huge clawfoot tub....Thanks for the info about pasty butt. I have never heard of that.
Our coop is ready but we have a brooder ready for the 100 chicks we ordered from ideal poultry. I know I am supposed to keep the chicks at 95 degrees and decrease the temp by 5 degrees each week. Just wondering if anyone can give me anymore tips for this many chicks. The brooder is old but...
