Today I witnessed my chickens kill and consume a mouse. A very brutal sight, as they pulled the poor little thing apart. Should I be concerned that they ate it? Can they get diseases from such behavior?
My outdoor cats catch and eat rodents all the time, without any ill-effects, but should...
The shell was similar to a snake egg in texture. It had a globule of what looked like egg white inside, so I fried it up and gave it to my dog.
My hen produced a normal egg this morning, so no worries...
She's 33 weeks old, and one of my best layers. I can count on her for 6 eggs each week (she typically takes one day off).
The little turd-egg is slightly darker blue in color; the photo doesn't really show off the lovely pale blue color of her 'normal' egg.
What the heck is this??
My easter-egger left it in the poop tray this morning. Shown next to one of her 'normal' eggs for size comparison. The shell on this little nugget is quite soft; her normal eggs have very strong shells. Is this a chicken fart? Any need for concern?
No problem -- just curiosity. I'm thrilled to be finally getting some eggs!
I was sure the Salmon Faverolles was only nesting -- never saw her come off anything but an empty nest.
But it looks like I may have been wrong -- she must be sneaking in when I'm not looking to do her thing.

Thanks for this info!
I didn't handle my birds much when they first arrived, so they don't like being handled now. But I will try to catch them tomorrow and flip 'em over for a vent & pelvic exam.

This is the first day I've gotten 3 eggs from my 4 hens.
One hen is not yet showing any signs of being ready to lay, so I'm ruling her out.
The egg from the Easter Egger is obvious (blue), but the other 2 (Black Australorp and Salmon Faverolles) are brown egg birds.
I've been stalking them...
When we integrated 2 new young hens into an older flock, we created a situation where they could see each other but not harm each other. They lived together, but separate. We put the young girls in a 'playpen' (http://tinyurl.com/jul5wtj) inside the main chicken run for 3 weeks. They had...
