These are our new babies. We got them on May 21st and spent memorial day weekend building their house. It's been framed out with mostly 2X4's we got for free although we did have to buy the siding and some of the boards for the roof. Above is a picture of the framing for our coop. We put...

    Chicken hiding, losing head feathers

Hello, I have 12 chickens in an 8X8 coop. 6 Barred Rocks and 6 Rhode Island Reds. They are about 14 months old. One of my Rhode Island Reds has been hiding behind the waterer for 3 days, she seems to be losing the feathers on the back of her head, and the skin looks irritated. She won't come...

Any Mainers need a new coop? GORGEOUS shed on craigslist $50!!

Sea Chick If you're looking for cheaper land along the midcoast try the warren-union-washington area. It's close enough to the coast (I live in Warren) and there are LOTS of farms. It is a buyers market right now.

    chicks/grit?

Hey, I get to answer a question. What a concept. Chicks don't need grit unless they are getting treats. As long as they are just getting starter they don't need grit. Once they start digesting bugs and greens and such they will need the grit. (It's for their gizzards, to grind up the food)

Stupid question-best way to attach hardware cloth

The poultry staples work great and they are easy to hammer ( I can't drive a nail longer than an inch and a half to save my life). Another question for all of you, I would like to put hardware cloth on the window to my coop (aluminum framed, think storm window.) How the heck can I attach it...

New coop, do I need to box in the bottom?

I'll take some more pics as we progress, plan is to work on the interior and run this weekend, if it doesn't rain the whole time. To tide you over here is a pic of my babies (four weeks old now) enjoying their new coop with their pal Lurkey (who thinks he should be able to run outside everytime...

    Anyone know how deep?

Not if you're using the right type of wire. I work for a well drilling company and the wire and pipe goes in the same trench. Outdoor wire is meant to be wet.

New coop, do I need to box in the bottom?

The plywood was cut out around the rafters so nothing can get in that way. The top of the run is going to be covered with chicken wire, completely enclosed. I have decided to bury the hardware cloth a foot down, where i can that far and staple to the bottom to the coop. We haven't put the...

New coop, do I need to box in the bottom?

Here is our new chicken coop mostly done. Not sure if I did that right, anyway Assuming I did, there will be a 12X12 run to the left side, I realize I need to box in the bottom side that is exposed to the run, but does the whole bottom need to be (hardware cloth, lattice, suggestions? Thanks

    Okay, bought a turkey poult

So when the turkey gets bigger I can just give him an outside perch in the pen, as apposed to locking him up with the chickens, as long as I have something for a roof over his head to keep him out of the rain? What about October/November when it starts to get cold (I'm in Maine) Won't it be...

    Okay, bought a turkey poult

Thanks for the tip on the grit, I had no idea. I've got a cocketiel so I can use his grit when I get home. My chicken door will be that high anyway, so it sounds like he'll fit. I figure I can always seperate him later if he turns mean or starts picking on the chickens. I'm hoping where they...

    Okay, bought a turkey poult

I am keeping my turkey poult with the chicks and he's doing great. I put out a seperate feeder with turkey starter in it but he I think he is eating mostly out of the chick starter. I know there is less protien in the chick starter, but I can't force him to eat only the turkey starter if I'm...
