We introduced a rooster to the flock about two years ago. Until now, none of the hens stayed broody for more than a week. This year, the top hen went broody. The other day, my husband said, you have two chicks walking around in the run with their mom. Sure enough. I have no idea how they got...
Thank you for your marvelous advise and support. I said a prayer and sent Inky home. I am 62, garden and can anything in sight plus have had backyard chickens for many years. But never tried hatching before. Guess all is not perfect in the world of hatching.
So Friday morning we woke up to a hatched chicken. It took a day but he is wobbling about on his feet. Problem is, he was born with over an inch long blood vessel attached to his rear ended. The blood vessel came off last night, but a huge blood clot that covered his entire backside was dried...
Pro series model 4250 from Farm Innovators. No separate place to add water. I end up just pouring through the air holes in the last several days of the 21 days. terrible directions. I think some in another country tried to translate
Don’t know what pip and zip are. We got up Monday morning and some of the shell was pecked away and you could see a little beak. That was now 14 hours ago. No movement since. I peeled away a few little pieces of shell about 2 hours ago but there was no movement
First time incubating. At day 18 one of the chicks started opening its shell. We saw a little movement. After about 10 hours or so it stopped and is no longer moving. It appears to have died. I had one of the two vents open and humidity was changed from 40 to 70 percent when we saw it was...
GOT 'EM !! Went to close the coop at 8:30 this evening and found the girls screaming and yelling about 10 yards from their coop door. Looked in a saw a possum face looking back at me. Needless to say, that possum won't be coming back anytime soon.
No girls were harmed in tonight's craziness.
Just a little update for everyone who replied. We had a trap outside the coop inside the fence for a few weeks. Nothing ever came by. We continue to keep the chickens in the coop and close the door each night. After 2 nights of chasing the girls off the trash can, they just automatically go...
Wow. didn't realize how many predators there are. Maybe it was an owl ?? The head, neck, inards were gone. The the rest of the chicken was left intact, breast and everything. Very little blood left, just some underneath were Igor was sitting. Feathers about 1/2 dozen or a few more laying...
Thank you everyone. I've ensure ALL the girls get into the coop at night... no stragglers perching outside. The traps have yielded nothing so far. Seems weird that an owl would follow a chicken into the coop through that little door and go to the end of the coop to get her.. Anyway, cannot...
