I have a 4x4 with a external nesting boxes hen house with a 7x16' inclosed run for 5 hens. It works fine for them. We lock them in the hen house at night and let them out in the am. We built ours out of pallets and the wood for the run was old deck boards.
We live in the Owens valley which is surrounded by the Sierra Nevadas in northern California. I wouldn't live anywhere else, besides maybe Australia. :)

Our hen house is inside a inclosed run. Solid roof and concrete all around the bottom with wire sunk in pretty much fort knox. We live in a area where it only gets down to 15 degrees maybe once a year. We were going to put a door on the hen house later this summer or fall before it gets cold but...
