I guess it doesn't really matter what they are. It's just irritating to buy them labeled as one thing and get another. The farmer was adamant about the breeds I was buying, but he also knew I was very new to this and didn't know anything about them.
I bought 4 pullets from a private farmer about a month ago. The chicks were supposedly 2 days old when I bought them. Of the 4 chicks, 3 of them are the same size and one is getting a bright red/orange comb already and the 4th is much smaller than the other 3. The smallest chick seems to keep...
I'm curious what everyone uses for dust baths? My chicks are only 4 weeks old so they are still in the basement. What age do they start using a dust bath? I plan to put them in the run and coop outside in a couple weeks. I was told by a few people that sand and diatomaceous earth is a good...
I have 2 hunting dogs that would have went straight through any wire fence I could find. I didn't really have any options other than pickets or chain link.
Fished the run tonight. Since I covered the whole run will that help accommodate since the actual coop isn't big enough for the 4 pullets I have? It is completely enclosed and very secure.
So here's an update for everyone that had given me advice. I finished the run with the exception of the roof which I plan to be a solid roof to completely shield from the elements. The run is 14' long, 10' deep and 6' tall. I know the coop being only 12 square feet is a bit small for 4 birds...
I think this will fix the issue of door size. It still allows the full door to be opened for cleaning purposes. At the same time I can open just the small door to reduce wind and cold in the winter.
I actually had not thought about ventilation. I'm completely new to all of this so I appreciate the advice. Do I just need to cut some holes in the front and back and cover them with chicken wire? My chicks are only 4 days old, so I have some time to make sure everything is right before they...
Thank you for the advice. I will be adding something to the door so it's not quite as big. It was a friend's dog house so I'm slowly but surely getting everything in working order for a chicken coop. I will have to look into a drip edge as well.
This is a dog house that I'm converting into a chicken coop. I have 2 Rhodebar pullets and 2 Cinnamon Queen pullets. Please let me know if you spot anything I should change. Constructive criticism is welcomed seeing as though I'm very new to all this. The run is going to be 14' long by 10' deep...
