I have a hen who has gone broody for the 3rd time since Spring. It's only been about 9 weeks since her last hatch and she has babies from the first 2. However, she's not sitting on any eggs, just being broody. Here in New England it's starting to get cold - 40's at night. Will she...
Thanks, she is in good overall health. I'll continue to monitor her health. She's a cranky broody so I tend to let her be and make sure she has her favorite snacks nearby.
Hi fellow chicken lovers!!!! :jumpy:jumpy
There's so much info out there and I just cant find what I'm looking for. I believe one of my ladies has gone broody again, just 8 weeks after her first hatching. I tend to be a let nature take it's course sort of person but we're intervening on...
Hi!! :)
First time with a hen who has hatched her own. :celebrate Only 1 hatched (the others may not have even been viable, she was an egg thief!) She is a great mom!! Here's the scenario: I have her and the chick in a separate part of the coop/run they are separated only by chicken wire...
Hello all!! So this is the first time I've had a hen hatch her own baby (outside, in a coop). I've been given the advice that I need a heat lamp. My thought was that momma would take care of that?? Haven't chickens been doing this for a millennia?? Is a heat lamp a MUST or just a nice to have?
I have two roosters and not enough hens right now. I am planning to get more hens but due to supply it will be another 3 to 4 weeks before I can get some. If I keep one rooster separated from the rest of the flock for a while (5-6 days) Will the two roosters stop fighting or will they just...
This year my game of chicken roulette ran out and I ended up with three roosters! So far they all have really good dispositions but I can only keep one
1 of the polish is much larger than the other and he's the one that crows the most; both polish come from the same hatching. He is also the one that moves the others away when I come into the coop. Nothing aggressive, just what I would expect to see (from my non-roo owning point of view) :D
Thanks! Right now they all seem to be respectful of us when we go into the coop. Even the dominant one moves away. The only aggression is my eldest hen who likes to come peck my feet until I give her a pat on the head :)
Thanks! My plan for keeping a roo is really for "natural" reasons. Meaning for what a roo does for a flock. If I get chicks - great; but I'm not specifically looking to breed or show. I only have a few hens so keeping 3 roos is really not an option. This info really helps in making my...
