Oh I should note we flipped the tarps in the summer so the side facing out is silver to reflect the heat. This picture was in the winter, so we wanted to absorb the heat, hence the brown side out.
The back yard has pretty good shade over the whole area, if the coop was in direct sun, it...
So I have raised chickens for 3 years now, never had one die on me, but in the past month I have had two Plymouth Barred Rocks (1.5 years old) die on me. Both were fully intact, inside their pens, plenty of food and water. Both occasions They were positioned under the shade of a tree, we use...
Charlotte NC, which is a mid sized city of 1 million plus. So I basically only have access to what TSC has and even they looked at me funny when I said I had quail.

Does anyone know the ingredients in game bird feed? Because like I said, they don't sell it around here and don't know who makes it to look it up online.

When it comes to feed, like I said it is Chick starter feed crumbles (for chickens) at 26% protein because it is the only thing available. Someone said to me switching to layer feed might do the trick. Layer feed is about 18%, but has other stuff too. What do people think about this...

Any suggestions to get them laying?
-pen is about 5 square feet for 3 females

Thanks for the help guys. Would it work if I took all of them out, put them in separate cages for a week or so then put them all back at once in the original cage?

I pulled out the males from the main cage and put the injured one in her own cage till she could heal some. She healed up pretty well over the next three days, she was...
She didn't seem to mind the hat while I was holding her, but I put her down and she shook her head until it slid down her neck, then the rooster came pecked at it until the strap broke. They then played keep the Santa hat from each other which was hilarious.
I just got my first quail a few weeks ago (brown and Texas A&M Cotournix). I built a cage with a 1/2" hardware cloth bottom so I could minimize cleaning (see below). Quick questions:
1. Will they just lay their eggs anywhere? If I don't grab the eggs right away will they peck them? I...
So this past thanksgiving I was with my family up in Western North Carolina, up in the mountains. I was walking around a lake in Black Mountain, NC and saw these ducks and was awe struck at how amazing they are. I looked them up, found out they are Mandarin Ducks, from Asia and Siberia. What...
I also have some training wheels from a kids bike that I was thinking of adding so I can scoot it around the yard so the droppings can be evenly dispersed and the grass better fertilized.
