So I'm getting my first chicks from a small farm an hour away from a laying chicken that's eggs are hatching. Cross your fingers I get all hens!
As you can see, I'm very excited
I have a 5x7 coop, and I'm only getting 3 or 4 chickens. I talked to my friend and he said if you have that big of a coop with only 4 chickens you'll need a heat lamp. But i've heard that it can be dangerous with grown chicks?
So this is my coop, I'm building a ramp over it soon so they have somewhere to go outside, but I was just posting it here to see if you have any suggestions. ( by the way, I don't have any of the bedding and water/food in it)
My local tractor supply branch is 2 hours away also.
I'll call fleet farm, but I'm not sure if they still purchase from hatcheries this late in spring.
We have a fleet farm, but I wasn't aware they sold the actual chicks, I haven't seen any of them before.
And I have checked craigslist, but not much recently in my area
Hope this is the right forum-
So I'm well informed about raising chickens from chicks. I want three chicks, But I can't spend thirty dollars on shipping from mypetchicken! And Ideal Poultry is okay, but there's not much else to buy that's useful other than poultry to spend the minimum 25...
Thanks
I'm starting out with 2 chicks, I'm getting them either from fleet farm or My Pet Chicken.
Well it's raised two feet off the ground, and the windows are at least 5-6 feet off the ground.
The door has an open spot but I'm going to board that up way before I even get the chicks. There are very small windows up at the top but unless that racoon plays basket ball I'm sure they wont get in
What do you suggest for venilating the windows?
When I clean it out tomorow I'll definately try to get some pictures. And yeah I was going to get feeders, waterers, nesting boxes. It is fairly raised, and the only predators we have in our area are racoons, so I don't think safety will be a problem.
