Hi,
I have a hard time keeping the pine shavings dry in my run over winter. I have completely enclosed it now with clear tarp and hope that will help, but, I noticed my chicks seem to have dry feet/scales.
Can I apply a cream to them? What should I use?
Thanks!
I wish you would have provided pictures for each style. The names are a bit confusing. After all, a fountain style waterer is also gravity fed. So which one is it really?
Also, I just ordered a heated dog bowl for the winter and plan on using it outside in the run only.
I will elevate it on...
I also have the omlet door and love it. It won't crush a chicken but will open up again. I also installed the light inside the coop and that works great as a signal for the hens to go inside. My coop windows are facing north and so it gets darker in the coop then in the run. But the light surely...
I placed the 3rd window low to allow cool air to enter the coop at the bottom and let the warm/humid air escape higher up through the other 2 windows and the vents. I figured I'll get some nice circulation going that way.
Thanks for all the replies! I am getting used to the idea that more ventilation is most important. It just takes a newbie a while to get used to the idea and not worry so much about the chickens being cold - but that they rather need to be dry and get fresh air.
So I think I will add that...
Thanks everybody for all your good replies! I grew up in the city and now live in the suburbs (but 1 acre lots) and there is plenty of wildlife here. Starting to be less squeamish, especially when it comes to protecting my girls and feel much better now knowing that I am not the only one...
Hi,
Still working on my coop for my 5 3-month old girls. I got the large coop from OverEZ. Today I added a vent in the roof overhang over the left window.
Previously we also added a 3rd window in the door (morning sun and breeze comes from that side).
I am wondering if my coop now has enough...
Hi, I always look my coop doors with a key and now have an Omlet auto door installed also (and that seems quite safe).
I secured my run with a hardware cloth skirt all around - but now I'm wondering if raccoons could open the run door? You squeeze the handles together to pull the pins out of...
Wow! Didn't realize that many raccoons can live in a small area. I take it they are not very territorial. But the less raccoons are around, the less chances!
I read that chickens cannot see in the dark like we can. So if it is too dark in the coop, they may not see the roost.
My coop is facing north, so it's get's dark inside faster than in the run. But I also just installed the Omlet auto door, but I also got the light. The light comes on about 5...
Thanks! Yes, I am trying and have read a lot about predators. But I also realize that as a newbie I still have a lot to learn. I worked hard on my coop and run and hope with the hardware cloth going all around them it's like Fort Knox.
