I can't figure out if this is a hen or a roo. 11 weeks old today. Any help is appreciated. I have to get rid of the roos because of a city ordinance and I really want this one to be a hen.
I'm going to try and answer everything here...poop looks normal...eating and drinking free choice Country Road Starter/Grower combo (sold at Rural King)...no lethargy or sluggish behavior. I have washed everything and refresh the bedding every day and completely change it every other day...they...
It's a brand new Titan Brooder Hen. My last chicks all died in a heat lamp fire so I got this because I was afraid. I have the legs set at slightly different heights on one side versus the other in case a chick needs a little more or a little less heat they can move around. No other signs of...
I've got another one. She was laying lifeless under the electric mama and so I picked her up and tried to warm her up snuggled up to my chest. I gave her a few drops of water. She perked up, opened her eyes and looked at me, then died. It has to be a sickness (viral, bacterial) to take 2 chicks...
Let me begin by saying I'm on the autism spectrum and I feel the need to try and understand everything.
I went to check my chicks (16 born 1/16) and one of my Rhode Island Reds was laying dead between the feeder and the electric mama hen. Everyone else is doing fine and acting normally.
I...
I picked up my chicks about 24 hours ago and they were very vocal. They've been in the brooder all day, eating, drinking, getting their leg bands removed and under the warmer...but tonight they have been silent. I keep checking on them thinking something is wrong. Am I just being paranoid?!? Is...
That's awesome!! It looks like I can also get a thermostat to control the temperature, too. That would help to decrease it as they age. I thought something like a reptile heating pad would work (this is even better!) but everything I was finding was saying not to do it.
Thanks!! The thought of...
I lost all my chicks and hens in a fire caused by a heat lamp several months ago. I'm about ready to start again but am wanting the safest heat source for chicks. Has anyone tried a reptile heating pad? I've seen some that say they warm up to 85 or 125 degrees Fahrenheit so logically I think it...
Losing any creature you care about is awful. @Hen Power 's comments were not helpful, kind, compassionate, or respectful. I'm sorry on behalf of her that she was so rude to you.
Tonight around 2:00am local time I went out with the dog and saw smoke coming out of my coop. The heat lamp that was on a timer for the 3 week old chicks (30m on/30m off) fell or was knocked down and started a fire. All 6 chicks were gone and my 2 laying hens. I assume they died of smoke...
The transformer near my house blew and the power company is saying at least 2 hours to restore power. I keep my house set at a toasty 60 degrees. Without a heat lamp how long do we reasonably have before we have to relocate? The chicks are 19 days old.
Thanks!!
