Hi all, weird question. I got a hen cheap because she was the last one I wanted and had vent gleet, which the seller didn't want to deal with (hence the bargain price). It had a smell and I could see the white discharge and runny poop on her feathers but I figured it wouldn't be too much trouble...
Okay, I guess I'll just keep an eye on them. I ordered some VetRX to help with the symptoms at least? We're also in the middle of switching from crumbles to pelleted feed, I don't know if that will help but it was what the store had on hand when I went to get their refill bag, haha.
Noticed a couple of my hens sneezing. No discharge or whatever, though they do have their mouths open, although I'm not sure whether it's related to the sneezing or the heat (they have a tarp over the top of the run for shade but even so, it's been hot here). They're all still laying regularly...
One of my chickens just died in December from complications due to Marek's (what the autopsy report said) and she was about...probably close to two years old, maybe a little under? If I'd known she wasn't vaccinated I would have done it. Was a sweet and docile hen (and a really great egg-layer)...
The only reason we pondered a spider bite is because we discovered a huge nest of spiders in the roof of the coop when we went to clean it out after we found Piper's body...in all the time we've had this one (well over a year at this point) and in all the times we opened it to gather the eggs or...
I'd like to know answers too as I just found my favorite hen dead in one of the nest boxes...no injury as far as I can tell, zero chance of a predator (locked coop/run) and when I saw her this morning she seemed totally fine. I don't think I'll ever know, though...only thought is a sudden injury...
The most mind-boggling egglaying story I have is that I got my Easter Egger hen over a year ago (back in fall of 2012, which was the start of our chicken-keeping adventures), the other chicken was merrily laying away almost an egg a day...she laid one smallish egg, kind of weird-shaped...
I have failed in getting good photos, but I have peeping videos! (That sounds terrible!)
In this one, Peepers doesn't actually start making noise until around the 0:12 mark. Most of that fussing noise is Deli, one of our other hens.
In this one, it's just more of Peepers and Peanut...
Got a head-scratcher here and I'm not sure how to proceed...
2-3 weeks back one of my chickens was sneezing, sounding kind of like a human with a bad head cold (sounds wet/mucous-y, for lack of a better way to describe it). I isolated her for about a week to observe, gave her yogurt and her...
Hey all, one of the babies I picked up from the chicken swap is very clearly developing into a gorgeous little roo. Mixed parentage and I've forgotten what all was involved in his breeding...he also seems to be a bit of a late/weird bloomer since he's got his saddle and hackle feathers coming in...
Well, I wasn't expecting to get an egg this soon, but hooray! :D Just brought our trio home yesterday from the livestock swap, and someone already laid an egg!
Not sure who, though. The three we picked up are a Delaware, an Easter Egger (both around 4-6 mos.), and a red sex-link (about 1.5...
Hello all!
Lurker and hopefully-soon-to-be chicken owner here, taking the plunge and joining up for forum membership. Been picking through the forums to get ready (coop kit arriving soon, making list of supplies to buy, then time to pick out some chickens!) and well, figured I should get a...
