    Distressed Hen

She's still having the weird contractions but has seemed livelier. I've given her an epsom salt bath every day. I still don't see or feel anything.

    Distressed Hen

I didn't know about the preen gland! But after looking at several pictures, I think you're right and that's what it is. I've given her a warm Epsom salts bath and electrolyte water. She seems livelier today so here's hoping. Thanks, again, everyone!

    Distressed Hen

Copy/paste...

Well I got a finger in her vent - which is pretty much constantly contracting. But I don't feel anything but soft tissue in there.... Any ideas?

    Distressed Hen

I don't feel anything externally. I will try to put a finger in and bring her in and give her electrolytes. Thanks - I'll let you know!

    Distressed Hen

I can't find anything wrong - no swelling, no injuries. But she didn't want to come out of the coop this morning, and when I brought her out, she just stands there. The only thing I see that seems weird is that it looks like she's breathing out of her butt. By that I mean her entire rear end...

    Howdy!

I'm an urban chicken owner in West Seattle, WA. We thought it would be fun to raise our own eggs (we eat a lot of them) and we'd like to have a farm someday, so figured chickens would be a good place to start. I'm enjoying looking at all the coops and enclosures, as well as learning about...
