Pullets sitting on Blue jay nest

Thought I'd update you all and answer some questions. The little jay is hatched. I don't know if he was hatched when they started sitting on him. My birds aren't laying yet. The oldest is only 3 months or so. They still take turns up there. Mostly split between a few RIR and a few Ozzy's. We...

Pullets sitting on Blue jay nest

Quote: It's at the top of the western wall, about 10 feet. They have taken to hanging out in the rafters. I couldn't figure out how they were getting up there for a while. Seems the jump up on a four foot high barrel, then "fly" the rest of the way.

Pullets sitting on Blue jay nest

The baby is still in there, I have a pic of it somewhere. Mama doesn't even squawk at them, it's the oddest thing. I'm thinking those will be my broody's, we'll see I guess.

Pullets sitting on Blue jay nest

I'm not sure how they came to the agreement. Mama blue jay will hang out in the trees near the barn until I let the chickens out in the morning. Once they're all out and eating she'll leave. If the baby starts chirping one of the RR or an Australorp will climb up and sit on the nest. If one of...

Pullets sitting on Blue jay nest

My pullets are about 2.5 - 3 months old. They had a blue jay set up a nest in their barn. Lately a few have been taking turns sitting on the baby blue jay while mama's away. Why? Is it normal for chickens to sit on strange birds babies?

Wanted: One Delaware and one Barred Rock Cockerel SW Washington

I'm hoping to find them around 2 months old, as the pullets are about that age. Anyone? I see I'm getting no response.... hmmm. They don't have to be 2 months, older, younger, it's ok. That is just an ideal. Also, I'm not looking for freebies or anything.

    socialism

Just thought this thread could use a little humor. FEUDALISM: You have two cows. Your lord takes some of the milk. PURE SOCIALISM: You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. You have to take care of all of the cows. The government gives...

Delaware Gang @ 5 Weeks Old (newest Pics #96/ 9 Wks Old)

I'm curious about how to determine a good Delaware too. I have six pullets now, but they're almost all white. No markings to speak of. They're 4-5 weeks old now so shouldn't they be showing something? As far as foraging and what not, best I have. Active little buggers to.

    Do Chickens Stalk?

(S)he doesn't do it to me so much as other chicks. (S)he is definitely NOT the top of the house. I have an Australorp that is very much the head hen. It makes sense that it'd be a Roo, smaller than the rest. Combs redder and tail feathers are shorter. She's almost always the first to spot...

    Do Chickens Stalk?

One of my BR's (about 5-6 weeks old) will get her head low to the ground and stalk. At least I think that's what she's doing. Then she'll run around doing some crazy dance. What's up with that?

    Roo's or pullets??

Thanks all, I wasn't sure cause some of their combs are starting to get pink. Seems like maybe I got all 22 pullets. I figured one of them woulda been a Roo.
