Wanted to update my progress:
I'm up to 28 hens and 6 roosters. I'm getting about a 70% hatch rate in my last two hatches. I've been able to correct spradle leg on two of my chicks successfully and I've gotten pretty good at dispatching and harvesting. In addition to eating the eggs I've...
This project seems to be working well. I'm not getting a 'ton' of larvae, yet, but it is producing some and I see them in the compost growing. Don't know how the cold will affect them but then we don't really get a lot of really cold days here. If it really starts producing well I may add...
Thank you. I took a look at YT and learned how to make my own BSFL bin. Started it yesterday and already has a half dozen fall into the tray. Looking forward to it really taking off especially as an alternative form of quail food. Especially since they're so high in protein/fat.
Been awhile since I've posted. The quail project is a success (and thanks to all that have had helpful tips). I've got 16 hens and 4 roosters in my production cages with 12 more hens coming of age to fill up several more production cages.
When cleaning under the cages I always have thousands...
My first hatch of 6 went out into the cages at 3 weeks and they've had no problems. Bit of an adjustment for them going from a closed in tote box to an open wire cage, but they're doing fine and have a lot more room now.
Yesterday I inadvertently hit the set up button on my incubator. The temp got up to 102.6 for likely a period of several hours. I noticed it when I got home and reset the temp so now I'm back to just over 99.5. Will that adversely affect the hatch?
Thank you.
Thanks everyone. I'll take a look for some threads. I took about 8 out of the fridge to go with the one's I've been collecting. I washed and sanitized the incubator and set it up to get up to a steady temp. I'll place the eggs in tonight. That will give the eggs from the fridge like 8 or 9...
Opened up the eggs that didn't hatch, nothing but yoke in all but two that just seemed dried up inside (no liquid at all). So I'm satisfied with the 6 that did hatch and would anticipate that the next time I'll get a much higher hatch rate. I know the roosters are 'of age' as I've seen them...
Fridge is set at 39 degrees. Eggs have been in there less than a week, unwashed. Just curious if I could use some of them with what I've collected (at room temp) for the next incubation.
The temp seems to have held steady throughout the whole process. And I'm glad of that since this is the first experience I've had with an incubator (Janoel 10). I put in a separate thermo/humidity just to make sure. I'm thinking since this was the first batch of eggs that many/most weren't...
Ah, I see that many will wait till day 21-22 and some up to day 25. Today's day 21 so I'll wait to see if any hatch today and then probably turn the incubator off tonight. I'll get the incubator cleaned out and I'm saving eggs for the next go around. Shooting for 18-24 for the next batch...
