Thank you for your response! The articles were definitely helpful.
As of this morning she is clearly not fairing any better than yesterday as she can barely stand. She's resorted to lying down now. When I pick her up her feet are curled up. And her head sways slightly as if she is suffering...
Hello!
My hen, Cookie has fallen ill- I believe its only started yesterday as during the beginning of the week she seemed normal and was eating properly.
Yesterday I found her just standing inside the coop, refusing to move, and ate very little. I convinced her to eat some scrambled eggs and...
Hi all!
I've had Luna since early June 2015 and had been told that Luna was a female. Supposedly she was about 6 months old or something. We originally bought her as a friend for our tame male cockatiel, Milo, but unfortunately he flew away during that same month. On her own, Luna began singing...
Hey Chris,
Unfortunately I never got the chance to figure out the mutations of the quail, nor was I able to incubate anymore eggs. The white hen had (to my surprise) become broody (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/855513/broody-japense-quail-hatched-out-a-chick-finally) and hatched out two...
Judging from the pictures, does it look like she has bumblefoot on both feet or just the one foot? We're going to attempt surgery tomorrow as soon as possible so I'm still conflicted as to whether I should be concerned about both feet or just the swollen one.
Last time she had scabs on both feet...
Hi all,
My hen, Cookie, has a faint limp when she walks, and my parents noticed how swollen the bottom of her foot looked, compared to the other foot. She has a small black scab on the bottom of that foot.
Sorry about the vague details; it was already dark when we found out so I'll try and get...
Its summer here for me, so to cool my quail down I'll just mist them with a spray bottle and provide a shallow pan of cool water for them to stand in (which they really do enjoy on a hot day because it cools their feet down). Occasionally I'll put ice in their water to keep it cool. Plenty of...
Hi.
When I first got my quail, they didn't start laying eggs until two weeks later. They just need time to adapt to their new surroundings, so just be patient. The whole ordeal of long distance travel and a brand new home is putting some stress on them.
Don't forget to feed them a high protein...
I don't believe millet will harm them because I feed my quail seed leftovers (which includes millet) from my cockatiel as the occasional treat. As well as mealworms like Invision stated, you can also provided boiled egg or alfalfa sprouts for that extra protein boost until you can get the proper...
Well there's the obvious one with the male's mounting the females (although there has been some cases where female's mount females). When there are treats, in-order to 'court' the female, the male would pick up a treat in his beak and make a noise to get the female's attention. Its pretty much...
The only way to accurately check their genders would be to either observe their behaviours or vent sex (the latter is the better option) them because its rather difficult to tell the gender with these feather colourations. Button Quail are monogamous so once breeding season, and the right age...
(Sorry, I'm a little confused as to what's happening so excuse any mistakes. o.o")
[Wandering] Joscelyn followed with a bounce in each step as her Alpha lead them away from the territory they were trespassing.
'Maybe they should set stronger scent markers next time.' she thought in annoyance...
Quail don't bath in water (they are unable to regulate their temperature when wet), so instead, they bathe in dirt, sand or even food!
I'd suggest putting a small box filled with sand or soil for them to dust bathe in as it helps keep their feathers clean and mite-free (and probably dander...
