Ok - thanks for the feedback - I am going to get more of the oyster shells for their daily consumption. We do eat spinach daily and I bet a bit gets into their diet as dinner scraps maybe I will keep an eye on that.
Thanks
We have a very sweet Barred Rock who has for the last few weeks been laying eggs without shells. At first I thought that maybe they were being eaten by the chickens but I am now pretty sure she is laying shell less. Her shells had been pretty thin for the last few months but regular. Its been at...
So this week she started laying again. She has layed 4 eggs and is almost back to a daily laying schedule. But the first 2 eggs were rough and sandpapery the last 2 were smooth but all have been much lighter colored since she stopped laying and all have seemed thinner easy to crack open. Any ideas?
One of our 4 layers seems to be sick. Noticed a few days ago her feathers under her vent were covered in poop and I realized that I probably havent seen an egg from her in a week or so. That day seemed less interested in leaving the coop for free range time. Then tonight I looked in and she...
So I live in a very mild area - outside of Sacramento, CA where maybe 1x a year it freezes. Right now my coop has a couple of sides that are just wire and the door is wire because I like being able to see them and it gets warm here (over 100 in the summer). What do I need to do to make it winter...
I am trying to figure the same thing out. So far they seem to love to lay in the hardest to reach spot in the coop. I did put the plastic easter eggs in the nesting box but they seemed to be offended by them and would fling them around the pen. Filling them with rocks may be the next step.
Chickens made it through the day unfortunately their first full day in the outside world was 100 degrees! I am making some frozen bottles to leave in their coop with them for the day tomorrow. Gave them some frozen corn and blueberries and they loved it.
Havent completly finished ours but its close. Right now I am calling it the Runcible Coop. Just because I like the word Runcible. And a runcilbe spoon is a mix of a spoon and a fork and our coop is a coop and a planter
Its maybe 80%. Chicks started jumping out of their box flying around the bathroom and pooping EVERYWHERE so it was time to make the transition. The roof will have a planter and the side shows where the nesting box will be and where the doors will be - all the mesh will be replaced. And the run...
I used to be a pastry chef at a pretty darn nice restaurant. Our policy was an egg never goes bad. Leave it out or dont it has to be cracked to go bad. I am sure this isnt really true and in part because we would use the eggs well before they could go bad but they are one thing we were never...
