fresh ground chicken feed sounds great to me. we buy our corn (for American Guinea Hogs) in bulk straight off of the farm. We just load it in 55 Gal drums in the bed of the pickup truck. When we get them home we use a heavy duty moving dolly and ATV ramps to off load the drums full of corn...
I am raising rabbits and chickens (for eggs). Thinking of raising some meat birds and maybe even some heritage turkeys next year. Just wondering how to find a local processor for processing rabbits and chickens, in lieu of processing them myself, the way i do now.
I've got about 8 RIR's and 8 EE's and one RIR roo. all of the RIR's (except the two who are quaranteened with newly hatched chicks) appear to be loosing feathers on their backs and their butts, even the roo. I figured they were molting but it is my understanding this is a late summer/early...
Thanks for the advice. I am going to separate her today and put eggs under her. This is her first time and mine too, so I hope all goes well. I will let everyone know on the BYC msg board.
thanks
I have a RIR that has gone broody. She's been sitting in the laying box for two days now (and not real happy when I collect eggs, i might add). I'd like to put her on some eggs but was wondering how many is too much? Can she sit on a dozen eggs?
I'm going to separate her from the rest of the...
SilkieTime,
I have 7 RIR hens, 9 EE hens, 1 RIR roo, and 1 EE roo. It appears that the acceptable ratio of roos to hens is 1 to 8 or 10. I am thinking of getting 20 Barred Rocks tomorrow so I will try to get two roos to go with them.
gees louise! Mine are not tearing each other up like that, terry. Probably because the EE roo is a chicken (pun intended). I mean he runs from the hens, so when the RIR roo gets after him he just leaves the yard and as soon as he's out of the fence the RIR is happy as a clam. I think I will...
I have a small flock 16 hens and 2 roos. I am considering getting some more, barred rocks this time, and was wanting to get sexed chicks instead of straight run. (i've already got a freezer full of roos from the last straight run). My question is this, if I want to hatch some eggs in the...
thanks for the advice. Terry I'm in TN too, west TN. I had originally intended to separate the chickens by breed as you suggested. however, as they got old enough to be outside i had only finished one coop and run. the run was to be divided into two by a fence down the middle, but with just...
OK so here is the situation. I have a total of 18 chickens (9 EE and 7 RIR Hens and 1 EE Roo and one RIR Roo) the RIR roo has evicted the other roo. Wont even let him in the pen or the coop. He just kind of hangs out in the yard around the coop (and services the hens that leave the pen now...
not sure if it was the right way or not but I found that if I dab a bit of veggie oil on the paste and let it soak a few min it comes off a lot easier. couldn't soak it long enough in water w/o worrying me about the chick, but the oil stays in place for a while and softens the paste and...
I am the proud new (first time) owner of 15 RIR's and 15 EE's which are all now one week and one day old. All seem to be doing fine, healthy, eating, drinking, growing feathers, etc. However a couple of the RIR's have "pasty butts" I have tried to remove the paste with a wet papertowel but the...
I received my first chickens today. Got 15 RIR and 15 EE, all arrived in good health and are doing great so far. This is a hoot. The kids had a ball chasing down the two RIR's that escaped the brooder this afternoon. Named them Hudini and Chris Angel.
