I have a little partridge chantecler hen thats been broody forever and we can't seem to break her of it. Today at the feed store they had 2 day old chicks so I thought I'd see if she would adopt them. I brought 2 home and set her up in a nesting area off by herself in the barn and then gave her...
ok thanks, that's reassuring. This is the first time I've dealt with a broody that's a laying breed. My other broody is a bantam cochin and she acts very differently but she's a much more gentle bird. She takes months and months to start laying again too.
This morning we found that our broody australorp hen who still has 5 week old chicks with her has laid an egg!! She has started acting strangely this week, pecking the chicks on the behind every once and a while. I've been keeping an eye on her in case I need to separate her from the chicks but...
I was thinking that the one in the first pic was a boy too because of the posture. The one you pointed out in the third picture is the same bird. I guess I'll just have to wait and see on the rest, thanks for your help.
I've got 5 seven week old chicks, 4 are lav orps and 1 is a split black/lav. I'm curious how many boys/girls I have here. My pictures are not the greatest but they were running in every direction so this is the best I could do for now. I really appreciate the help and if anyone can explain what...
Here's some pictures of my broody Australorp hen and her 1 week old chicks
There are 4 lavender orpingtons, 2 split black/lav, and 1 blue orpington chicks. The other 5 blue eggs didnt hatch
I usually put the starter in when the chicks start hatching. I've only done this 3 times but my hens didn't take the chicks out of the nest in search of food until I took the remaining unhatched eggs away from them (about 24hrs after the first chick was fully hatched). From what I've read the...
I also have another broody hatching today and so far I have another two lavender orpington chicks and two split lavender chicks. There are also 6 blue orpington eggs but none have hatched yet which is disappointing, I really want some blues!!
they've been out all afternoon and they don't seem to need her for warmth at all, but it is still fairly warm here in the fraser valley (british columbia). I think they still might crawl underneath her at night though, I will have a peak tonight and see if they actually all fit or if they are...
Here's some pictures of my broody bantam cochin with her 1 month old chicks. I let them out to free range for the 1st time today, hopefully all goes well.
I have a separate brooder box that I put my broody hen in with the eggs I want her to sit on ( I've used a dog crate too). If she really doesn't want to move you could mark the original eggs with a pencil and just go in and remove any other eggs that have been deposited daily. I found that there...
