Cold windy weather and a free range flock..

I'm a first year chicken raiser and when reading about weather conditions with my girls I get mixed signals. I keep my 9 hens in a large coop where they have food, water, a roost, and 6 nest boxes. I let them out early in the morning and then close them up when they go to roost in the evening...

    One closed eye..

One of my six week old girls who is usually really spunky has been walking around keeping one eye closed. If the other girls leave her alone, it's almost like she's just really tired and will start swaying as if falling asleep. Should I be worried about this? This my first flock and I don't want...

    Late bloomers?

The brooder is big enough I'm sure I could just put poultry netting across part of it to section the two off. Good idea! Thanks!

    Late bloomers?

My barred rocks and EEs are coming up on 3 1/2 weeks old. All of the girls have feathered out beautifully except for two of the rocks. They have stubby tails, two-thirds of their wing feathers and barely any chest feathers. They look really sad and dull compared to the other girls who have...

3 week old chicks have the sniffles..

I'm raising my first flock and have ten chicks - barred rock and EEs. They are all really active and appear healthy except I've noticed a few of them sneezing recently. When I was holding one of them today I noticed she has a runny nose too. I've heard of medicating their water... but I'm not...

Water: In the coop vs in the run

Quote: Since I don't have electricity in my coop, does anyone know how to wire one of these thermostat controlled waterers for a battery?? Or is that a stupid question?

Water: In the coop vs in the run

Thanks for all the great replies! My original plan was to have a hanging bell-like feeder and waterer system inside as well as a hanging waterer out in the run for as long as I could without it freezing. I will probably just stick to that plan. I was concerned about taking up space in the coop...

Water: In the coop vs in the run

Hi! I'm very new to being chicken obsessed and have been reading a lot of books and a lot of posts. My husband is building my coop right now, and I'm going to use the deep litter method. I've read a lot of conflicting information about whether to keep a waterer in the coop or not. I've read...

wtb pullets about to start laying

I'm new to the site and to chickens! I'm looking for some pullets that are due to start laying in the next month or two because my husband says it will be cheaper than feeding chicks for 5 months. I've searched a variety of sources and it seems like I'm only going to get these from a local...
