As far as horn growth goes, pygmies are no different than any other goat. You should be able to feel tiny horn buds within a week or two of birth. Those will slowly grow into little nubs, then points. Does' horns don't grow as fast or as big as the bucks, of course, but they should be obvious...
I've raised Boer goats for almost 10 years now and I rarely, if ever, breed a doe in her first year, but then, I'm in a cold climate. My kids are born in May or June, so when the breeding season rolls around again in Dec. the kids are only 6 or 7 months old. They are going into a hard winter...
Any guesses on these little critters? Got them at a sale yesterday and, as a total newbie, I don't have a clue what I ended up with.
This one is absolutely tiny compared to some of the other chicks, so I think it might be a bantam of some sort. There are two others with similar size and...
Hi, everybody. I haven't posted in a while but I stumbled on this thread while trying to find out what one of my new little chicks is. (Bought a mixed box at a sale on Sat.) Anyway, someone else said it might be an Exchequer Leghorn. I'd never heard of that before but when I Googled it, this...
This isn't a one-dose wonder, but it does work great and is inexpensive: udder infusion. I know it sounds strange, but the udder infusion (mastitis treatment) is made up of the same triple antibiotic combo as the pink eye ointment.
Thanks for the info. I have literally acres of both spruce and poplar growing wild so I'll just grab a small stick for him to gnaw on. Glad you mentioned about the spruce being toxic. I thought about using the left over chunks of 2 x4 from our various building projects, but most lumber here...
I want to give my rabbit a stick to chew on to help keep his teeth ground down, but I vaguely remember that certain types of wood aren't good for them. I have spruce and poplar available. Which would be better?

Alot of people seem to be doing that now, I dont really know why. Hope its not just cause they look nice. Though I fell for it. LOL.
I hope its not babies, shes about 2 month old by her horns. I paid $20 each. That also tells why I had to get them. LOL
Why cross a Boer and a Nubian...
Pyr's, like any LGD, need to bond to whatever they are expected to protect and that bonding is only possible for a short time during their early puppyhood -- up to about 3 months old or thereabouts, so if you keep the pup in the house when you first get it, you're more likely to end up with a...
I haven't had much luck getting true lops when breeding a lop eared breed to a straight eared breed. Probably the best you can hope for is some airplane ears. Not that those aren't adorable, of course!
Last year, I had a bottle baby who was so fixated on me that he'd press his mouth against my leg, at about knee height, and just sort of stick there, like he was attached. I could actually walk (limp?) around the barnyard with him plastered to my leg. It was the funniest thing...till I needed...
The color pattern on her head is definitely Boer. I get markings like that all the time in my Boer crosses, and since Boer have pendulous ears like the Nubian, she has to be crossed with something like an Alpine to get those adorable airplane ears.
