How can I ensure a friendly Rooster?

I'd keep him until, and if, he gets aggressive, then if he does, re-home him. I don't bother worrying beforehand, it is needless worry.

What should I put in the bottom of my run?

We have small river pea gravel. The girls dig in it constantly - they toss the dirt below when they do, which lets them dust & handles decomp as well. An added plus is that they use it for grit. We've been happy with it since it doesn't ever smell & drains easily.

    Rooster doesn’t like feeder

On yours, if your rooster can't get his head in just take one port and remove the cover (you might need to cut it if it isn't removable), leave the rest intact for the girls. Hopefully it should solve your problem. I can only go by my own experiences: I had one of those metal ones; I wasn't...

    Shed Coop Idea

We have had the same shed (4x6 - black roof) bought from Home Depot for 6 Rhode Island Red chickens for a year now. We raised it 2' so it has air flow below, insulated it with with lock-type flooring over the insulation on the walls (the girls would eat the styro otherwise), linoleum on the...

Do I have to have a rooster?

Plain and simple - NO. My girls do just fine without a male.

What is Your Daily Feeding Routine?

I have a large tote, with a snap lid and six ports, that sits on a concrete block which is smaller (mice can't get to it) that is inside my inner run. The inner run door opens automatically into the outer door run in the morning and closes at dusk. The girls take what they want, when they want...

Fake Eggs in Nesting Boxes-- Good Idea, Nah, or Meh?

I can only give my experience: bought fake brown eggs, put them in the nesting boxes - the girls decided, nope. No fake eggs and no nesting box. All 6 decided "hey we all want the same nest and it just happens to be under the roost", which I had set up with 3 concrete blocks on each side, a huge...

My chickens do not eat much

Not all white grape leaves are suitable for rolling; the best ones are from specific varieties like Thompson Seedless (these are the leaves usually sold in jars), Villard Blanc or Sultana. It's important to pick your leaves when they're young and aren't too tough (and not treated with...

My chickens do not eat much

Mine go to town on styrofoam.

My chickens do not eat much

FYI. It depends on the kind of grape. I grow Thompson and Villard blanc because being of Middle Eastern descent I make rolled grape leaves. My girls really go for them. Those grape leaves are tender and have an all together different flavor than others.

    Run bedding smells

My run is separated into 2 areas which I can close off with a door in between. The one run is tarped and the ground is covered with about 2 to 3 inches of small river pea rock, which the girls love. There's never a smell. I keep feed and water in this one. The uncovered run is simply dirt, which...

Trying to get an idea of how many out there do free range vs chicken runs/enclosed.

My girls don't free range; Along with their coop, they have two runs attached to each other, one with a river rock flooring and a cover, their food/water, total predator protection etc. is in this one, and the second run a little less secure, has dirt for digging, dusting, bugs, partial sun (the...

    Fermented food jars keep cracking??

I've boil bath canned, pressure canned, and fermented for over 35 years and the majority of my mason jars are the same ones I started with 35+ years ago, so... The oven is a no, no (Causes stress to the jar). Quick temperature change is a no, no. (taking jars from the canner immediately). When...

    Nesting Herbs for Chickens

I don't know about the rest of them, but after researching rose petals I found they are good for them in moderation as a treat (as long as they are pesticide free). My girls go nuts over them.

    Questions

We put ours in their run permanently around 8 weeks (their coop is attached to their run and I had to throw them in one time and out one time, but after that they were happily using it themselves). If I might make a suggestion; I have bought both my runs, a chicken feeder, other chicken related...
