    Feeding egg shells

Reviving this thread! I have one of 7 laying. Will my other non laying girls eat the oyster/ egg shells if I leave it out in the coop or will they not bother with it since they don’t need the calcium?

    We got our first egg!

My sexlink Red laid her first egg this morning! I’ve never been so excited to see an egg! Now I only have 6 freeloaders instead of 7! Now a quick question, Should I buy oyster shells and just put some out in the open or should I just wait until more start laying to leave oyster shells out...

    One bite the other

Checked on them this morning and all seems well. No fresh blood anywhere and they seem to be getting along fine now. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it! First time chicken mom here!

    One bite the other

I plan on checking on them more frequently for right now. I already spend a lot of time in the coop, but they definitely need some extra attention. Thanks for your advice!

    One bite the other

Thank you! I went out there to check on it and it has already stopped bleeding. I dabbed with peroxide and polysporin. The EE that pecked her was up high on the roost. So it definitely has to be pecking order related. I don’t have anyway to separate them as of right now.

    One bite the other

I think it was jealousy. (Crazy chickens) I just gave them a sugar pumpkin to peck at. I have 7 chickens in a 8x4 coop.

    good bedding for run

I'm getting ready to do a good fall clean up of the run. What's a good material that i can throw down? Right now its dirt and some tree stumping shavings, they seem to like it, but just wondering there is something better. I dont mind making a mix of something either.

    Egglaying Signs?

I opened the nest boxes today and got them all ready for the girls. I got some ceramic eggs for them to practice with. I got them on clearance TSC or i would have just used golf balls. I noticed the past two days that my Gold Sexlink is squatting down whenever I pet her back. She is the only one...

    Egglaying Signs?

Thanks so much! We're quite excited about it almost being egg time! I havent noticed any kind of squatting yes. But I have noticed two of my girls' faces reddening, and along with the comb and wattle starting to get much larger than the other pullets.

    Egglaying Signs?

I'm sure this has been asked before and I apologize in advance! My chickens range in age about 14-17 weeks old. What are some signs that my older girls are getting ready to lay? Are there any physical changes? Behavioral? I'm going to open up the nesting boxes this weekend for them to check...
