I enclosed my run with 1/2" hardware cloth and buried it. I dug a trench about a foot deep and a foot wide and then lined it with the hardware cloth in a U shape (so there's three feet of hardware cloth lining the trench). The coop is entirely within the run. We have crows, hawks, stray cats...
This might sound ridiculous but is there any chance of the hens drowning in an open bucket of water in the coop? My husband is suggesting a cinderblock with a lightbulb in it, covered with sheet metal to prevent the hay from igniting. The heated water bowl sounds safer to me.

I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on those 9" needles. I bought some for socks, and I'm still on the fence about them. I tend to bounce between magic loop, dpns, and the 9" circular.
