You did! :) As you can see, 'chicken math' has struck with a vengeance! lol. I went ahead and integrated the teenagers with the big guys/gals. A few pecks, but it has gone better than expected. The young ones are happy to be out of the brooder and have some room to stretch! Thanks!
If I do that, how do you think integrating the younger cockerels with the older ones will go? Should I make the pens totally separate or can I have them just separated by a fence? Thanks!
Last year, I bought 8 pullets from TSC and ended up with 3 pullets and 5 cockerels...sigh. Later that year, one boy went to a 4-h kid and we bought 11 more pullets from McMurry. We weren't ready to cull, but we've had 13 chicks hatch over the winter. The oldest 5 are in the coop in a 'play...
I guess a lot of folks are thinking about integration right now :) I've have 4 roos and 14 hens in the main coop right now. They're all 8-12 months. Had to sew some chicken aprons for a few of the girls, but otherwise everyone seems to be doing well. I have a 'play pen' set up in the main...
I don't think so.....there were 7 in the first hatch. I found two dead a few feet from the nesting box. That's when I decided to get them inside. I don't know exactly why they died, they looked fine, but I wasn't taking any chances after that.
I like these! Going to show them to dh!! Here's what we've done. Our neighbors falling down barn has been the source of most of our projects. Large 2 hole speaker boxes work great as nesting boxes. Going to see what to do about covering the holes for the brooders like you did. We made our...
Thanks for all the input. SCG-I really wanted mama hen to take them, but I found 2/5 dead a couple feet from the nesting box and basically freaked out and grabbed the 3 that were running around the coop and took them in the house. We held vigil until the other 2 were hatched overnight and...
I posted this in the 'Raising Baby Chickens' forum, but then I thought you guys would probably know more than anybody, so cross posting-
Our hens have decided that January/February in N Maine is the time to hatch chicks. We've had 5 hatch two weeks ago and we brought them inside to a dog cage...
Our hens have decided that January/February in N Maine is the time to hatch chicks. We've had 5 hatch two weeks ago and we brought them inside to a dog cage in the kitchen. We have a large box in the barn that we built out of old window screens last year, but its too big to bring inside...
Thanks, Izzybella! We're up to 5 chicks. She's still sitting on two eggs, but they may be duds. Last hatch was Saturday.....playing the waiting game. :)
Hello all! Wanted to share from up in the County. We've only had chickens since April and we're learning a lot, especially about 'chicken math". Some of you may remember our TSC pullets that are cockerel debacle. :) Well, our Barred Rock went broody right around Christmas. I got advice to...
Haven't posted in a while. We haven't figured out what to do with 3 of our roosters. Seems like a lot of work to process just three.....Mid summer we added to our flock of seven Austrolorps with 3 red stars, 2 easter eggers, and 6 buff orps. They're just 20 wks and a few have started laying...
They both look to be BA's to me. I have two just the same age and the same difference in appearance. One is just getting red in the face earlier and will probably lay first. If you got them from a hatchery and not a BA breeder, there can be variations in the birds.
So, a while back I posted about the saga of the 5 pullets that ended up being 5 roos. So, if anyone is interested in 4 Black Austrolorps 16 wks old, let me know. The one I'm planning to keep chased one out of the pen today(up and over, ugh. Note to self-build higher fence). Time for them to...
