Australorps breed Thread

Ok bear with me here im just starting to learn more about breed characteristics. I recently discovered one of my buff Orpington hens was not pure bred based on her leg color. Who would have thought?! Anyhow I have two black Australorps and I noticed one has a light face (Around the eyes and ears) and the other hasa black face. Could one be ssomething else? Or part of something else? Besides the bottom of their feet I really wouldn't know what to look for.

Could you post pics of them?

Here's my Chirp. He lost his comb tips to frostbite but his face is red. Not pale, not black.

Now, if your chickens are young, they may have pale around the face. Can you post pics?

Peck, first pullet hatched from my own flock of chickens. Nonchalantly pecking the ground as I brag about her second egg. She's like, whatever. Yeah, I totally made that.

Sorry for the crudeness of the photos. (Phones don't transfer to computers too well) The one on the right has the black face and a rounded tail. The one on the right has (slightly red), but a much lighter complexion. (comparing to the black face not going by young pullet) She also has very pointed, direct tail feathers. They are both the exact same age about 16 1/2 weeks. Are the differences just because of them maturing differently or is one maybe not pure/different breed? Any input if much appreciated :)

They both look to be BA's to me. I have two just the same age and the same difference in appearance. One is just getting red in the face earlier and will probably lay first. If you got them from a hatchery and not a BA breeder, there can be variations in the birds.

I agree. The majority of my flock is Black Australorp and though they all hatched at the same time, I see the same. They are really beautiful when their comb and wattles start filling out. The red in contrast to the black is very appealing.

Thanks. It wouldn't hurt anything of there was a difference, I dont breed them or sell fertilized eggs. Its more as a learning experience since I dont know much about breed facts beyond what I want in my yard :) thanks again!
