Two of my gals started laying just over a week ago. They would lay in the run even though I put golf balls in the nest boxes. After the 3rd day of laying in the run, I talked with another chicken owner and he told me to remove the golf balls and lock them in the coop for a day. So I took his...
At 6 am this morning I was awakened to the sound of one on my chickens singing the egg song. I tapped my husband's shoulder and informed him that I believe our black Australorp was laying her first egg. He really could have cared less and rolled over. After the song was complete (it went on...
Good to know! I am on egg watch as my father-in-law came over to visit and thought one of my gals should start laying any day now. I go out every day but nothing yet. I am afraid to let them out to free range in fear that they will lay prior to figuring out that they should lay in the next box...
My awesome hubby made a pvc feeder and chicken nipple waterer while I was out of state for a few days. The girls LOVE them! I have another feeder inside the coop but this has become their preferred feeder. What do you think?
I have windows in my coop that I can open and close and they also have the hardware cloth because I didn't trust the screens to keep the critters out. I have been keeping them open all day and night while the weather is nice and the roost is at window height and I have another roost about a...
We built ours 24" off the ground. We wanted our girls to be able to go under it for some shade as we also have an attached run. With it being raised 24" it makes it easy cleaning as I don't have to bend over to clean the coop.
My babies loved to peck the dogs instead of each other. If they even saw the dogs through the glass...2 of the chicks came running up to peck at them. I was like a game for them and the dogs. Chicks peck glass, dogs bark like mad making the chicks peck all the more. They have since become...
I wish I could offer you some advice but I am new to chickens and got my babies mid-march. The ONLY time I heard them peep loudly was on our way home from picking them up and I think they were cold. Other than that...they have been so quiet. Like I was shocked at how quiet they turned out to be...
Thank you. No it was not a kit. I just looked at some of the awesome coops on this site and took what I loved from several of them and combined them into one. I made a rough sketch and handed it to my hubby and we built it as we went and made a few changes as we went. It actually turned out to...
The pullet shut door is working great. I did have to reset it this morning though because my girls are missing the last call before the door shuts for the night. I think because dusk is coming later now than when I programmed it a few weeks back. I think once I program it to close an hour...
The entire coop is 6 ft x 9 ft. Hen house portion is 3 ft x 6 ft and is raised 2 ft off the ground so the birds are able to utilize the entire 6x9 layout. We wanted to put the siding down to the ground as well so they had some shelter from the wind if need be without having to go inside.
My babies took to it quickly. I started them off with a nipple waterer from the first day. I had a back up water dish for the first 48 hours but once I saw all four were drinking from the nipple, I removed the dish. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly they learned especially since my father...
On March 18th I received my 4 little chicks and it was then we started to design and build the coop. I think it turned out awesome and the girls seem to like it. It ended up taking 3 weeks to build simply because it rained non-stop for 2 weeks. I was thinking we would spend around $600 to...
