Another quick update in case it helps someone else. The pullet seemed to go downhill after the last post - after 5 days of continuous wheezing, she had lost so much weight and energy, we decided to cull her.
Yesterday, we had the same symptoms crop up in our rooster: very loud wheeze...
Just a quick update- she's recovering. Wheeze is still present but less severe than before. After a couple of days of Oxymav B and VetRX, tuna and yoghurt, she is now standing up more, wandering around the enclosure, and generally more alert.
Yes, she's still wheezing but now with sneezing and thin discharge, so looking less like an obstruction and more like a respiratory infection. No eye bubbles. She's reluctant to move around too much but eating well. I've fed her scrambled egg and more yoghurt. I'll try the diluted lemon juice...
Hi all,
My 12 week old faverolles pullet started wheezing yesterday while free-ranging. I found her far away from the rest of the flock. When they saw me, the flock came into the run for their usual goodies. This pullet eventually came over but didn't enter the run, which was odd as she is...
Hi all, I wanted to share some photos of the injury that my buff sussex hen Olivette sustained and what I did about it.
I hadn't noticed anything off about her, no limping, she was still eating etc., and so it was by chance that she was in the nesting box and I gave her a little scratch under...
I've got them on a mix of Laucke Red Hen 17% protein and Barastoc Darling Downs 15% at the moment, as their usual feed is currently unavailable, but I'm hoping I can switch back to their usual soon. I'll try and source a 18% in the meantime.
As for why I gave her a bath - she roosts on a lower...
Hello all,
I was giving my light sussex hen a bath today and a vent feather trim when I noticed significant bruising near her vent. At first I thought it was a scab, but it's almost as though the scab is underneath the skin. She is otherwise well, eating and drinking ok, enjoying treats...
I think it's trickier when you don't have another chick to compare to. I've attached a photo of mine at 7 weeks - left is a boy, right is a girl. The second photo is the same chick as in this thread, when his comb was still pink with small wattle, who turned out to be a boy.
It's the worst luck, isn't it?
Will the cockerel be ok on his own for now? I'm going to try and keep him, and he'll have 6 hens to look after when he grows up. They are not so nice to him now but I guess that will change.
Hi all,
I picked up a new 12 week sussex pullet 2 days ago. Shame on me for not checking over her carefully but it was a long drive and I was tired. The issues were apparent once I got her home:
Sneezing
Gurgling
Mites. So many mites.
5cm long Roundworm in poo
Now also breathing heavily...
Some of you may have seen my previous post on these speckled sussex chicks. 4 were definitely cockerels but I managed to get 2 pullets - or so I thought. Unfortunately the one that was definitely a pullet was attacked by a fox, which leaves me with one. However she's looking more like a...
Hi guys, just thought I'd give a quick update. It's happy news - they are indeed speckled! Rather annoyingly, the ones with the best looking speckling pattern are most likely roosters! Ah well :)
So, I have done some internet sleuthing and found several discussions on this topic in another poultry forum (not sure whether it's ok to link here?) from, some almost a decade old. From what I have gathered, the Australian SS lines do tend towards a wheaten base (possibly due to a lack of SS...
I just got them through the local newspaper classifieds (I live in Australia), so I'm not sure if they have an official hatchery name/business. They'll be at the local markets though so I might drop by and clarify. I do note some pics on Google labeled SS chicks that look similar to mine at the...
