In the morning! ;) I have been too busy to take any decent pictures today. It is 1AM here- I thought I'd just hold the funny little duck until he passed but he had other plans, so I guess I will snuggle him into the brooder and see what tomorrow brings.
Another update:
That first baby, the one who made a hole and then took days to hatch and needed help, is now the biggest, strongest and prettiest of the babies. We have had 4 more strong, healthy ducklings hatch, including an egg I almost tossed because it had developed gross dark blotches. Go...
This morning the egg that pipped just a tiny bit a couple of day ago hatched just perfectly! I had made a safety hole and last night I chip a tiny bit of shell off, then she did the rest.
Just now I opened up the air cell at the top of the egg that internally pipped at least 2 days ago. The...
We have two more peeping eggs, one which has been pipped internally since at least my morning check and one which has had a small external pip since last night. I put safety holes in each this afternoon, after practicing on chicken eggs from the fridge, but I suspect I will have to try helping...
Update: We have had two babies hatch just perfectly, easy-breezy. That first egg remained steadfastly stuck- when I picked it up I could feel baby straining and the shell had several more cracks but the membrane stayed intact except for the one hole. So I helped a bit with tearing the membrane...
Last year our Indian Runner momma had 2 eggs which she raised to adulthood. This year those sisters had side-by-side nests and now there are lots of babies- at least 9? But we found one dead baby a bit away from the nest (which is in their shed) and there are two more dead babies in the nest...
We have a baby!!! Only it's not *that* baby, it's her neighbour. She did a much better job of unzipping all the way around and popping the top off, whereas baby #1 is just trying to poke her way out of a single hole. I think I will be helping her out soon if her sibling's crashing about doesn't...
Morning update: baby is cheeping and the hole is bigger! We're at 36 hours and counting. Meanwhile we have 3 others who have cracked their shells and one who has internally pipped and is moving, one who has internally pipped and doesn't seem to be. Because this is the first time I've dared take...
The rip in the membrane is now obvious and I can see it doing its thing in there. The membrane was very dry again so I put a bit more coconut oil on and now I'm going to bed too, if nothing else to keep myself from harassing this poor eggling. I'll update in the morning!
The membrane is kind...
Thank you guys! I really appreciate the input. I did try misting regularly but there's a lot of exposed membrane and it was really dry and tough. The coconut oil seems to have helped.
