    I get purple speckled eggs when the mulberry trees are dropping berries. at he speckles are especially beautiful on my green Easter eggs!

    Try some Buckeye hens they are suppose to be better mousers than most cats.That is a win win win. Eggs meat and rodent control.

    I suggest some kind of top. On ours we put a roof on part and rafters with fence wire. this way they get plenty of sun but are protected.

    Good luck. We have thought of doing the same. One of our hens gathered wooden eggs from a couple of nests and sat for several weeks. No wooden chicks hatched!

    Our first chick from our backyard flock. This is a "mystery chicken". We are not sure of parentage but are excited to see how he looks as he/she grows!

    We do have roosts outside. We took a big limb from a downed tree and buried it so the branches are parallel from the ground. Another roost is part of our children's old play set. We took the top of the monkey bars and attached it at a 45 degree angle at the side of the coop. The chickens...
